According to the minister, Lukashenko, who was sworn in at an unannounced ceremony, is trying to imitate “what is not in reality”, and this contributes to the government’s crackdown on the people.

Linkevičius has repeatedly called Lukashenko the former president before. According to the minister, previously such epithet was based on moral and political arguments, and now there is a legal basis for it.

“It just came to our attention then. When I mentioned that morally, politically, the mandate is already exhausted <...>. Now, as this element has taken place, as it is called, the inauguration, it has been legally present ever since, ”L. Linkevičius told reporters at the Paneriai Memorial on Wednesday.

“We see that there is an attempt to imitate what is not in reality, but the most disappointing thing is that people suffer from it, they continue to be intimidated, arrests and detentions continue,” said L. Linkevičius.

According to him, this inauguration of A. Lukashenko does not improve the situation in the country.

“There is no way out of the situation, and this fact neither improves nor highlights it. It consolidated only what we have said more than once, “said L. Linkevičius.

“Apparently, the intention was to capture from the last forces what they believed, but that unprecedented and massive event showed all the deplorable spirit of the situation,” he added.

Now that this element, as it is called, the inauguration, has taken place, it has been legally present.

Lukashenko was sworn in as president of Belarus on Wednesday for a sixth term. The ceremony, which had not been announced in advance, took place at the Independence Palace in Minsk.

Belarus has been holding mass protests for more than a month over the August 9 presidential election, which Lukashenko has ruled the country since 1994.

The opposition and the western countries consider that these elections are rigged.
