Kukuraitis: one cannot speak of any extension of old age

“I can help the rulers and say for them, if they do not dare, one cannot speak of an extension of old age,” says L. Kukuraitis.

According to the former minister, any consideration about when and how the required retirement age in Lithuania could be raised is currently only a source of tension in society and does not bring any benefits.
“Everyone is tired of quarantine restrictions, there is a lot of tension in society, unemployment of the elderly is high and not decreasing now, companies are reporting bankruptcies and the need to fire people, there is talk of people who retreat into the shadows. So, even the theoretical discussion about raising the retirement age does not scare society, even more so, does it not balance them and encourage them to make socially wrong decisions here and now? ” Question L. Kukuraitis.

According to the member of Seimas, it is necessary to speak of a greater survival of the elderly in the labor market, but not in that context.

“Society is aging, but all the rising forecasts are based on old methodologies, the nature of work is changing with the development of technology, so it is not completely clear what awaits us in the future, especially given the trends positive demographics in Lithuania in recent years … It would certainly be much more appropriate for the government to abruptly address how to help older people find employment and keep them in the labor market now, because unlike other age groups They are currently out of the labor market and no longer return to the labor market.

That is the problem, and that is what the authorities should do during a pandemic, and not fall asleep with the inactivity mechanism approved in January, or worse, scare everyone with 20 years of dire prospects? Or is it that we want to divert our attention from the failed handling of the social consequences of the pandemic? ”, Says L. Kukuraitis.
