As Klaipeda Mayor Vytautas Grubliauskas told BNS on Tuesday, the Christmas tree decorations will go out on Thursday.
“The city’s main Christmas tree, which is lit 24 hours a day, will turn off around 5 p.m., when the usual street and square lighting comes on. In the Renaissance Square, the festive lighting of the trees, which are decorated with bubbles, is turned on together with the lighting. This is where the normal lighting will come on, but the tree lighting will not light up, ”he said.
According to the mayor, the decorative elements next to the Christmas tree will also be turned off and the area will be fenced off.
V. Grubliauskas stated that Klaipėda had given up New Year’s fireworks earlier, as in previous years, residents in the central part of the city will not be able to allow them.
“Entrepreneurs with outdoor trade permits who come to a specific location with tea, coffee or cocoa machines will be strongly advised not to even go to the Theater or Revival Plaza on New Year’s Eve,” said the mayor .
“If there are those who categorically want to use the permits acquired in the past, it will be closely monitored how the requirements are enforced.” It will be exactly the same, and with the constant commerce of those cafes and bars that operate in the Plaza del Teatro, control over compliance with the restrictions will be increased, “he added.
V. Grubliauskas has also highlighted that traffic restrictions will be introduced in the city, so that “access to the Plaza del Teatro will be sufficiently restricted.”
“We will focus not only on the central squares, but also on the entrances to the sea gate, to the pier. It is no secret that on New Year’s Eve fireworks and jokes are fired on champagne bottle caps. it has agreed that access to the pier will be restricted, “he said.
According to the mayor, more than 300 policemen or their sympathizers will patrol the city.
Proposes the introduction of movement restrictions for New Years Eve
The mayor of Šiauliai, Artūras Visockas, told BNS that the municipality had made the decision to abandon the New Year’s fireworks last week. He also stressed that he does not believe it is necessary to extinguish the fir in the city.
“I’m not sure if turning it off would change anything,” the mayor said.
He also called on the government to introduce a temporary ban on leaving the country across the country.
“If we really want to prevent people from going to the city, then I call on the government to announce that no man will leave the city for two hours, for example from 10 pm or 11 pm to 12:15 pm”, said.
Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė has said that a curfew can be introduced when a state of emergency is declared in the country. This decision must be made by the Seimas.
“If he really wanted to, he probably could,” said A. Visockas, when asked if the government could do it without a decision from Seimas.
The mayor urged the people of Šiauliai not to leave the house unnecessarily.
“It’s very likely that a group of people gets together in one place or another and you get sick. If you don’t mind that you might get sick, go for it,” he said.
Panevėžys will cover the central square
According to Eglė Morkūnė, head of the communication department of the municipal administration of the city of Panevėžys, there will also be no fireworks displays in the city and residents are encouraged to be home.
“This year, the residents of Panevėžys are offered an alternative: a specially created 3D virtual tour, which allows them to admire the Christmas tree in the city and the festively decorated Freedom Square without leaving home,” he said.
According to the representative of the municipality, to avoid crowds, on New Year’s Eve the central Plaza de la Libertad will be fenced off, restricting the possibility of entering and going en masse.
“The control over compliance with the quarantine rules in Laisvės Square will be carried out by private security companies, police officers and specialists from the Law and Public Order Division of the municipal administration,” said E. Morkūnė.
“Residents of Panevėžys are urged not to gather in other public spaces in the city and in the courtyards of apartment buildings, police officers will patrol the city and check if the residents meet the quarantine requirements,” he added.
According to the representative of the municipality, it is not planned to turn off the central fir in the city, since it will be fenced, but stressed that this decision may change.
The Kaunas City Municipality announced Monday night that it would restrict people’s access to the Town Hall Square and abandon the traditional fireworks that were here.
“However, by encouraging people to stay home and avoid visiting public spaces, the city intends to help create a festive atmosphere in current conditions and provide fireworks in unannounced locations closer to residential areas,” said Agnė Augonė, Head of the Department of Culture of the Kaunas City Municipality.
Even before Christmas, the Vilnius City Council announced that it would renounce New Year’s fireworks and physically enclose Christmas trees in the Cathedral and City Hall squares. On Tuesday, the municipality announced that the fir trees in the squares of the Cathedral or the Town Hall will be extinguished on New Year’s Eve.
