The Christmas tree lighting event, which brings thousands of Klaipeda residents to the Theater Square, will be different this time. Although the Christmas tree in the Theater Square will be illuminated on December 5, after assessing the situation of the emergency situation throughout Lithuania, Klaipeda residents will be invited to watch the lighting ceremony on online platforms.
“We were the only ones who responded to the municipality’s call for proposals for the organization of Christmas and New Year events, and the reasons seem very clear: the quarantine and all the related difficulties that we will have to face. Realizing that we would face many limitations and that we could not have the celebration we wanted, we made this decision after a long debate. And finally, we decided only feeling the obligation to continue the most beautiful Christmas traditions born in the port city and not to disappoint Klaipeda residents who are looking forward to the holidays. The pandemic is trying to limit us and we are looking for solutions, not stopping and waiting for understanding and support from all the inhabitants. Under the current rules, we were forced to abandon both the traditional fir lighting and the cozy pre-Christmas gatherings in the Plaza del Teatro and the Christmas fair. In this situation, we will have to invest more not in cultural content, but in security or technical implementation of ideas. The situation changes the decisions, but not the essence and meaning of this period: share, create, educate, enjoy. We believe that together we can welcome not only a safe, but also a merry Christmas, ”says Romandas Žiubrys, Director of Klaipėdos šventės.
A responsible but magical Christmas month program
On the evening of December 5, Klaipda residents and all those who love the port city will see an intriguing journey towards the beginning of Christmas during the webcast: a festive concert dedicated to Klaipėda with greetings from artists from various Lithuanian cities and the time to light a Christmas tree directly from the Plaza del Teatro. Well, the entire Christmas period until the new year will be accompanied by a “Northern Star” light installation in the heart of the old town. The concert “Christmas is coming to Klaipeda” will unite several capitals: Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, Kaunas, the temporary capital, Nida, the future capital of Lithuanian culture and Klaipeda, the future European capital of youth. The festive concert will be directed by Santa Claus himself.
