Officials moved to other units, leaving only old furniture and unused machinery and equipment left in the building that was erected in the years before the war. Some metal safes weigh up to 500 kilograms, so you have to cut them first.
In the old basement detention center you can see the conditions in which the detainees lived just a few decades ago. Some of these chambers will be turned into a small museum.
A new detention center has been installed next to the main AVPK building, where detainees will be housed during reconstruction.
The Kaunas AVPK headquarters was built in the interwar years. The building is one of the most interesting administrative buildings of this period in Lithuania, where the police finally settled.
Negotiations on renovation work have been going on for several years. These processes took a long time, but we finally managed to sign a contract with the small company Virmalda.
Review worth just over 5 million. it will last for two years. The renovated facilities for Kaunas residents and police officers are scheduled to open in late 2023.
After the renovation, the Kaunas County Police Command, specialized criminal police units and units performing administrative functions will be located and working in the building again.
According to Virginijus Rabačius, director of the company Virmalda, which won the competition, the company he runs has been operating for 23 years, during which time it has implemented more than 250 projects.
Most of them are related to heritage restoration works (cultural objects): restoration works of Panemunė Castle, revision of the Kaunas branch of the Bank of Lithuania, revision of the Kaunas Philharmonic building, works in the State Theater of Kaunas Puppets or Trakai Vokė Mansion and many others.
“We are happy not only to be able to contribute to the renovation of another important object, but also that with our work, preserving the past, we will create the future for future generations”, shares the head of the company.
The building marked 91 on Vytautas avenue, where the AVPK headquarters is located, was designed by the famous architect Vytautas Landsbergis-Žemkalnis, and its construction took place in 1932-1934.
The Kaunas County Board, the Kaunas City and County Governor’s Office, the Kaunas City and County Police Chief, and the Department of State Security were located in one of the largest administrative buildings of Lithuania before the war.
In the basement there were archives for offices, courier floors, a boiler room and other premises, and in the courtyard there was a two-story garage with floors for drivers and a printing press. During the years of occupation, the building was owned by Soviet KGB figures, and after Lithuania regained its independence, the building was turned over to police officers.
A year ago, construction began on a new Kaunas Police Building on the Radvilėnai Highway, which will have a capacity of about 450 people. This represents one third of all Kaunas AVPK employees. The project is being implemented by Merko Statyba through a public-private partnership.
The duration of the partnership agreement will be 15 years, during which the company will be paid 23.5 million LTL. euros. The settlements are planned for early 2022.
Located in this building, the police direction will be able to dispense with old leased premises that do not meet modern requirements.
