A celebration throughout the city.
Although the traditional planned three-day celebration did not take place due to the situation in the country, the quarantine did not prevent Kaunas residents from properly celebrating the city’s birthday. Due to quarantine restrictions, City Day is celebrated for just one day this year, May 23. The date was chosen by combining two holidays in one: the city’s birthday and Neighborhood Day, which is traditionally celebrated in Europe on May 29. “The courtyards are opening, the city is celebrating!” With this slogan, the holidays covered not only the central pedestrian streets, but also many Kaunas courtyards.
This year, the festive initiatives moved to the patios of apartment buildings, residential streets and virtual spaces. Birthday surprises spread throughout Kaunas. From morning until night, songs, dances, theatrical performances and other exclusive events were held in different areas of the city.
To avoid the still limited crowd of people, times and addresses were not announced. The exclusive birthday format took place not only in the city center, but also visited Kaunas’ residential neighborhoods, apartment patios, and some private home streets.
Aerobatic air show
One of the most memorable moments of the holidays was the performance of the high-level pilot of the Lithuanian acrobatic group ANBO, which made the residents of Kaunas look at the sky and admire the virtuous performances. While flying the sky over Kaunas, the planes “drew” fragments of the crown in different districts. In this way, they crowned the city celebrating their 612 birthday.
Festive dinner in the heart of Kaunas.
This acrobatic flight also announced the start of the gala dinner. The idea of the “Courtyard Festival” complemented Kaunas’ birthday program in the city center. More than three dozen Kaunas cafes and restaurants responded to the invitation to join the initiative.
Catering establishments invited Kaunas residents to tables decorated with white tablecloths and flowers. The tables aligned at safe distances spanned several kilometers not only in the renovated Laisvės Alley, but also in Vilniaus Street, up to and around the Town Hall Square. Kaunas residents and guests were greeted at the festive dinner tables at safe distances. City residents were urged to repeat the same thing in their own homes, building tables closer to patio doors.
An unconventional initiative
According to the press release from the Kaunas City Municipality, it has become a tradition that the tables are set and set by the residents themselves, but this time the cafes, bars and restaurants of Laisvės Alley and Vilnius Street and Town Hall Square you are invited to take care of it.
“The city’s birthday initiatives bring Kaunas residents together. Not only representatives of culture, but also public catering establishments throughout the central part of the city are actively involved in organizing this year’s celebration. It seems that a chain of festive tables of record length will be extended. This year’s festival model could become a beautiful tradition, when the festival reaches all of the city’s courtyards, “said Kaunas Deputy Mayor Mantas Jurgutis.
Cultural institutions and communities are involved.
The press release states that the city’s birthday program is special, as it is being created by a large number of Kaunas cultural institutions this year. These include dance and music ensembles, the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra, the V. Kudirka Public Library, the Romuva Film Center, city theaters, museums, and the Kaunas 2022 coordinating team.
Performances, concerts, educational programs and other interactive activities have become a common gift of cultural and artistic institutions for citizens. The Kauna communities also actively participated in the preparation of the Christmas surprises.
A gift from Vilnius to Kaunas
On the occasion of his 612 birthday, Vilnius presented the residents of Kaunas with the same number of the most beautiful spring flowers – white peonies. The flowers were distributed in the Laisv alley, where they decorated the tables of Kaunas residents.
“Quarantine has limited universal access to the celebration. So, thinking about how to surprise the temporary capital, we decided to make them happy by giving them 612 flower rings that will decorate Kaunas tables outdoors or other spaces where the celebration will take place. I hope Vilnius residents from around the capital’s old town will join in the celebration. Congratulations to Kaunas! ”Congratulated the Mayor of Vilnius, Remigijus Šimašius.
