At week 36, the pregnant woman began to give birth unexpectedly. As ambulances were in a rush to call, Viktorija Kiznytė, the dispatcher at the Kaunas District Ambulance Station (GMPS), gave parents instructions on what to do over the phone.
Doctors who arrived found the girl who had already been born, but the baby was not breathing and showed no signs of life. Jolanta Šerelienė, a GMPS emergency medical care specialist in Kaunas district, and Gytis Kliučinskas, a paramedic, rushed to revive the newborn.
This is how GMPS staff described the entire process on the social network’s Facebook account:
Another memorable morning.
Early morning on August 11. The end of the shift is here. At approximately 6 pm we received the last invitation. The dispatcher reports that the situation is quite complicated: a woman, 36 weeks pregnant, with a positive COVID-19 test, started severe abdominal pain. It later turns out that both parents have positive Covid-19 tests. We are in a hurry to give birth. The speed on most of the road is almost 140 km / h. To save time, we prepare personal protective equipment along the way. We’re in a hurry, although waiting for help from home can seem like forever …
When we arrive we find a baby already born, a placenta … The mother’s state is stable, but the baby does not breathe and does not show signs of life. The situation is complicated. There is no room for emotions. We initiate the resuscitation of the newborn: we clean the airways, provide oxygen, warm the newborn, perform resuscitation actions with special means … tick seconds … The baby is very small, very weak … but we hear the first inspirations … The first weak voice of this little girl … She started a new life. The tension subsides … We hand over the stable baby and the mother to the resuscitation team … Shift’s over.
Once again, we were convinced of the benefits of teamwork. We are happy with the professional management of the dispatcher Viktorija Kiznytė and the provision of instructions to parents before the arrival of our GMP team: Jolanta Šerelienė and Gytis Kliučinskas ”.
Kaunas GMPS chief physician Nelita Gudžiūnaitė-Bybartienė told the Delfi portal that she is very happy with the successful outcome of the story.
“We are very happy because it was actually a very difficult case because we had to revive the newborn at home. Neonatal resuscitators often resuscitate newborns under lamps in operating rooms. It is definitely not an everyday thing to revive a newborn, “said the interlocutor.
In this case, not even a resuscitator had arrived at the scene. Only later did two more brigades with rescuers arrive, taking their mother and daughter to the hospital.
Although both parents were diagnosed with COVID-19 infection, N. Gudžiūnaitė-Bybartienė said it had no significant effect on delivery.
Later, the mother thanked the doctors through Facebook and wrote that, thanks to them, they are “safe and in the most loving hands.”
