Karbauskis: We have a clear initiative to appoint an opposition leader

The leaders of the “peasant” and social democratic factions do not hide that once the government program of the current government is clear, the possibility that the factions agree on a common opposition program and the role of the opposition leader will be considered.

Ramūnas Karbauskis, leader of the Peasants, told Eltai that he had not yet spoken with the Labor Party or the LSDP about a general agreement between the opposition factions.

According to him, if the government groups agree to a coalition agreement, then the opposition groups will also consider signing a cooperation agreement.

“If it happens that these three liberal parties will be in the coalition, then, in that case, we will certainly be one of the largest factions in the opposition and shape the opposition policy accordingly. We have a clear initiative to appoint a leader as well. of the opposition.

But now we are in no rush to do so and there have been no meetings between the Social Democrats, the Labor Party and the “peasants.” I also missed the opportunity to speak with the leaders of these parties. It is not that time yet. We think about it. But it is too early to speak today because we do not have a ruling majority, “he told Eltai.

When asked if he would assume the role of leader of the opposition, R. Karbauskis stated that he still could not answer.

“I cannot answer this question yet. Such decisions must be made by the group, as well as the opposition in general, if it decides to join,” he said.

The LVŽS leader is convinced that the Freedom Party, the Liberal Movement and the Lithuanian Christian National-Democratic Union, although very different in terms of values, will sign a coalition agreement. Then, according to R. Karbauskis, the opposition will start raising questions about the implementation of its program and the possibility of a joint agreement between the factions.

“These three parties have tough questions and differ in their approach to values. Yes, I think they will agree. Because some are very power hungry, while others will bring some values to the country in the name of the agreement.

I have no doubt. Our group is waiting very calmly at this time and is not taking any action or statement. We hope to respect the will of the electorate. If these parties agree, we will also get down to work and prepare to work in the opposition (…) We will be a rational opposition and we will have our own shadow government, I think we will even have our own program, alternative budgets . We will have everything that this opposition did not have during these four years, ”R. Karbauskis told Eltai.

LSDP leader Gintautas Paluckas also made no secret of the fact that the opposition will consider a cooperation agreement once the ruling government’s program is clear. According to G. Paluckas, such an opposition agreement must have a concrete content.

“We have not yet discussed it with other possible opposition groups. Such a cooperation agreement must have substance. On what and why we will cooperate. What aspirations will we have in common? It also depends first and foremost on the rulers of what their government’s program will be. Consequently, it will depend on how much the opposition needs to work together and if some agreement is needed to defend some of the things that have been gained during this period. If there is no such need, the opposition factions in turn will implement their opposition programs, because according to the statute there is also an opposition agenda, “he told Eltai.

Although it would suffice for the LVSS faction to appoint an opposition leader to one, G. Paluck does not rule out the possibility that the leadership position may rotate among all opposition factions in this period as well.
“We have not yet spoken about the leader of the opposition, but in principle one of the large factions has almost half of the members of the opposition, which would allow them to decide for themselves the leader of the opposition. But, in general, an oppositional culture is characterized by the rotation of leaders between opposition factions. But not necessarily. We will talk to our colleagues about it in the near future, “he said.

Elta was unable to contact Labor leaders.

ELTA recalls that, according to the Statute of the Seimas, if an opposition faction or its coalition has more than half of the Seimas members belonging to a minority of the Seimas, the largest of that faction or the leader of the coalition is called a leader. of the opposition of the Seimas. The leader of the opposition enjoys the additional rights of the leader of the opposition provided for in the statute, belongs to the Board of the Seimas.

In the new Seimas, the LVŽS won 32 seats, the Social Democrats – 13, the Labor Party – 10.

Under the current situation, the “peasants” are likely to have the largest number of minority votes, so that one of the members of the faction can occupy the position of leader of the Seimas opposition.
