R. Karbauskis believes that after his resignation as a member of the Seimas, the issues relating to the Audit Committee and the representative of the “peasants” among the Vice Presidents of the Seimas should be resolved.
“The largest faction of the opposition in Seimas was left without representation in the Seimas Board, after which an attempt was made to modify the statute so that the Audit Committee was not available to the opposition,” he explains.
“If he hadn’t done it (Delfi had resigned), we would have been left without the vice president of Seimas and without the Audit Committee, and in any case they would have ridiculed us indefinitely. <…> We try to deprive ourselves of the instruments that are mandatory for the opposition Seimas faction to do its job. My withdrawal is a form of protest and it allowed us to win what we wanted ”, says the president of LVŽS.
He stressed that this had not been the case in the Seimas before, as in the previous period. “Four years ago we approved Irena Degutienė, vice president of Seimas, and Ingrid Šimonytė as president of the Audit Committee. We didn’t do it, ”says R. Karbauskis.
Bielinis: Karbauskis achieved what he wanted
Political scientist Lauras Bielinis believes that although R. Karbauskis’s decision seems drastic, it has already yielded a positive result.
“The rulers began again to discuss and communicate with the ‘peasants’, looking for an opportunity to find them a suitable place. After all, this is one of the largest factions: they have to find their place both in the ranks of the vice-presidents of the Seimas and in the committees. I think R. Karbauskis achieved the result he wanted ”, said the political scientist on the program“ Delfi diena ”.
According to him, despite the resignation of R. Karbauskis, the “peasant” faction in the Seimas should remain fairly stable.
“I think this group will survive. We see that all the factions have a number of members that they are leaving, it is possible that after the departure of R. Karbauskis the discussions will begin and a stricter confrontation may occur between some members, but this day I believe that the faction is well mobilized, “he said. .
R. Karbauskis was elected a member of the Seimas with a list of “peasants”, now Asta Kubilienė will take his place. R. Karbauskis was a member of the Seimas for three terms: 1996–2000, 2000–2004, and 2016–2020.
