“Investigators today accused Mary Kalesnikava of … calling for action to undermine the national security of the Republic of Belarus through the use of the media and the Internet,” the Investigation Committee said.

Mr. Kalesnikava is reportedly being arrested and the investigation is ongoing.

Mr. Kalesnikava, a member of the presidium of the Belarusian Opposition Coordination Council, had previously been arrested by officers of the Belarusian militia on the border with Blatarus. As previously reported, attempts were made to bring the woman to Ukraine, along with other Belarusian opposition figures, but he refused to leave and tore his passport at the border.

It was later reported that Maryja Kalesnikava had been transferred from Minsk to the Žodzina detention center.

Her colleagues reported that her officers wanted to be forcibly removed from the country, but she broke her passport at the border. She was later arrested and considered a suspect in a case of calls to seize power.

President Alexander Lukashenko stated that “M. Kalesnikava was arrested for violating the rules of crossing the state border. “

Opposition lawyer Ms Kazak said her client considered the actions of the past days as kidnappings.

For more than a month there have been unprecedented protests in Belarus over the presidential elections on August 9, which were declared the winners by Alexander Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994. The opposition and western countries consider these elections to be rigged .

On August 18, supporters of Sviatlan Cichanouskaya, a former Belarusian presidential candidate, formed a Coordination Council to organize a peaceful transfer of power, but virtually all members of his presidency have been arrested or expelled from Belarus.

The Belarusian government considers the Constitutional Council to be an unconstitutional body.

Mr. Kalesnikava was arrested on September 7. Two days later, the Commission of Inquiry announced that he had been arrested in a case of incitement to take power.

Opposition lawyer Lyudmila Kazak said her client considered the actions of the past few days to be kidnappings and that the accusations were absurd and politically motivated.
