In the King Mindaugas Cup (Citadele KMT), the quarter-finals of Juventus de Utena and Morning Vilnius began to become classics. The hosts of the match in Utena 89:87 (19:23, 26:21, 26:30, 18:13) beat the opponents and achieved the first mutual victory.
On January 16, the teams will face a retaliatory battle in the capital.
Rytas started the match with a 7: 0 streak, and soon Martynas Echodas and Andrew Goudelock increased the difference to double digits: 13: 2. It is true that “Juventus” straightened up and were not far behind (8:13), and Sigismund Skučas’ 3-pointer narrowed the gap to 3 – 16:19. Vaidas Kariniauskas did the same: the result was the same, but Rytas finished better in the fourth: 23:19.
The Juventus team again compared the result (27:27), but Andrew Goudelock added a couple of shots. Utena’s team was slightly ahead when Martynas Gecevičius and Bryantas Crawford struck from distance (32:31), but long shots by “Rytas” and good play by A. Goudelock helped regain the initiative – 40:36. Meanwhile, Žydrūnas Urbonas got the first technical foul and the inspired residents of Utena stayed ahead – 45:43. After the second half, the hosts took the lead – 45:44.
The third part was also tense, but fines from Vytautas Šulskis and three-pointers by Martynas Gecevičius immediately increased the difference: 52:46. Still, even three times in a row, the representatives of “Rytas” stopped issuing fines and used it perfectly – 53:52. The score fluctuated slightly for both teams, with a 71:71 tie. Only Andrew Goudelock’s 3-pointer allowed Rytas to take a 3-point lead in the fourth quarter at 74:71.
At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Rytas’ attack was completely disabled, and Juventus took advantage of it with a 79-74 advantage. The lack of points was finally stopped by Rytas and the gap was again minimal (81:82), but was again increased by Vaidas Čepukaitis – 86:83. M. Gecevičius shot from afar, leaving “Rytas” in less than 2 minutes (89:83), but the shot required by Dovis Bičkauskis left an intrigue – 87:89. With 41 seconds to go, M. Kupšas fired over the country, and “Rytas” had a chance, but didn’t take it – Utena’s team had a 2-point lead over the retaliation.
“Juventus”: Vaidas Kariniauskas 16 (7th ed.), Martynas Gecevičius 14 (4/8 trit.), Bryantas Crawfordas 11 (7th ed.), Mindaugas Kupšas (4/5 double) and Žygimantas Skučas – 9 each, Gintautas Matulis 8.
