The sixth gear section is shortened by one hundred kilometers. From Al Qaisumah to Hail. A “grounded” sandy road to the mecca of motorsports.
In the shortened sixth kilometer sixth stage of 2021, 688 kilometers per day awaited the participants thirsty for adventure in the Dakar, of which 347 kilometers of track, 265 kilometers of public roads to the start and 76 kilometers until the day of the dream vacation will host the Haile bivouac.
Track pavement profile: 55 percent. sand, 35 percent. dunes, 10 percent. primer. What does this mean when translated into human language? Let’s try to deconstruct.
Although the promised one of the most difficult routes “lost” 100 kilometers in weight, the spirit of complexity was maintained in the remaining 100 kilometers of dune massifs, from small level I and II dunes to the most difficult, level III dunes. , dangerously breaking ridges and dangerously descending a steep incline. This huge sandbox joy was complemented by fast and slightly slower sections, “framed” by a landscape of canyons, according to the team’s press release.
The code name for this day is sand of various shapes without special stones.
The organizers did not promise the jaw-dropping stones at this stage, but a three-tiered cocktail of dunes could catch the eye of more than one Dakar soldier. Let’s talk about those dunes that are classified into three levels by Dakar standards. Its complexity does not depend on the size of the dune, but on the sharpness and viscosity of its ridge.
Sometimes even very small dunes can be very complex and dangerous. The direction of the swelling of the dunes is also significant.
Most of the danger comes from its steepest point, or in racing terms, the stairs up and the stairs down when the invisible dune ridge descends at an unpredictable angle. These dangers and possible consequences are very clearly illustrated by the experience of last year, when more than one racer smashed the armor of his race car after jumping off such dunes.
A new day is an old story: a medley of Dakar technique at the start line of the speed section
After capturing the best result of 2021 on stage five, the KREDA team crossed the finish line in 23rd place. After cutting the sixth speed stage, which crowned half the Dakar, by 100 kilometers, the organizers decided to take the confusion to the usual surprise action. The start times of the three different Dakar classes were again mixed up and written on a white sheet of paper in one line, which Dakar parents should christen in the name of Meat Grinder.
Starting 43rd, 17 SSV trucks, light prototypes and motorcycles lined up in front of the racing duo. More than half of the slowest front-wheel drive team consisted of trucks considered the Dakar giants.
The crew had to patiently “armor” themselves and wait very patiently for the right moment, pushing due to the location of the vehicles on the runway path and not having enough room to turn.
During that wait for a fair and saving moment to bend, the bodies of the racers sitting in the cabins of the cars had to process more than a kilogram of dust and drive slower than their limits.
Starting from the idea expressed by the partners themselves, “The more difficult it is, the better for us”, we can safely say that the challenges prepared by the organizers have been met. The Dakar punk duo climbed up and after spending 4 hours and 21 minutes on the track, at 4:01 p.m. Lithuanian time, the crew reached the finish line of the sixth speed section, provisionally in 22nd place.
How does the KREDA team rate the day?
“Antanas drives something very slow. I’m kidding, of course. Everything today is very smooth, no clogs“- said the navigator of the team Darius Vaičiulis, who was smiling up to his ears.
“I slept half a day and drove well the other half, but everything was very normal. We had too much fuel with us, an additional 100 liters, which was not necessary due to that canceled section of the speed section. The car was driving hard. That sand is so cursed here that it blocked all the wheels, but it’s the way it is, most importantly, in the end, ”said runner Antanas Juknevičius, who gave a brief overview of the day.
