Johnson paved the way for the publication of the long-awaited report on Russia’s interference in UK politics

A government spokesman said the Parliamentary Committee on Intelligence and Security (ISC) would be restructured next week and could then announce its findings on disinformation and campaign interference in the run-up to the 2016 Brexito referendum.

The committee finalized a 50-page report in March last year, and the document was approved by intelligence agencies in October.

However, Johnson did not confirm the decision to release the report, and the ISC was released before the December election. The decision to make the report public was deferred until the committee was reinstated.

The list of proposed new members for the committee is expected to be released later on Thursday, and lawmakers can vote on it next Monday or Tuesday. The new members will elect a president.

Committee members must be approved by the Prime Minister.

A Johnson spokesman said publishing a report on Russia’s actions “will be a matter for the new committee, but we will encourage it as soon as possible.”

The ISC launched an investigation in November 2017 in response to alarming reports that Russia was trying to influence the 2016 presidential election in the United States. It was feared that Moscow might also try to influence the British June 2016 referendum on withdrawal from the European Union.

Prime Minister Theresa May accused Russia of “spreading false messages” to “sow discord in the West and damage our institutions.”

In March 2018, the attempt to poison former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and his daughter Julia in the English city of Salisbury, for which London and its allies in the West also blame Moscow, was reinforced by ISC.

Former committee chairman Dominic Grieve accused Johnson of deliberately delaying publication of the report to take place after the election, despite Downing Street’s denial.

Politicians from the main opposition Labor Party said the report could contain evidence of Johnson’s conservative party’s ties to Russian billionaires.
