Two additions to the bill aimed at legalizing the state annuities of former Seimas members were registered with the Seimas Chancellery last Friday afternoon, the portal writes. delfi.lt.

J.Liesys announced that it was considering suspending its membership in the party on Wednesday, on the show “Delfi diena.” The Seimas member explained that such a decision was not willing to harm the party that governs the new ruling coalition.

The Liberal Movement announced on Facebook Wednesday that it did not support amendments to the bill on state rents for unelected members of the Seimas introduced by members of the Seimas, including J. Liesys.

“In 2020-2024. The initiative of J. Liesis, who was not re-elected to the mandate, was not coordinated with the faction of the Liberal Movement, so it cannot be presented as a whole-party initiative.

These initiatives must be coordinated with the party faction and their presentation does not conform to the party’s regulations and obligations. At a time when Lithuania is facing such challenges, any initiative on benefits must be clear and appropriate. This is not the case.

It is a mistake to equate the members of the Seimas with the signatories of the Act of Independence. The Liberal Movement takes the position that state revenues should not be paid to unelected members of the Seimas, ”the party wrote.

J. Liesys admitted that he did not coordinate the initiatives with the party faction. He advocated offering rents to unelected MPs to pay four years instead of life. He also assured that the amount of the annuity could be discussed.

Delfi.lt announced this Wednesday that in 2007 two procedural stages -remission and consideration- with the additions to the bill were intended to equate former and recently elected parliamentarians with the signatories of the Act of Independence, granting them the same privileges. The state rent would also be paid to all former prime ministers.

The initiators of the proposals are the vice president of the Seimas, Jonas Liesys, representative of the Liberal Movement, and Artūras Skardžius and Andrius Mazuronis, representatives of the Labor Party in the Seimas.

The proposal of J.Liesis proposes to keep the date of entry into force of the law already on November 12 of this year, A.Skardžius and A.Mazuronis – January 1 of the following year.

BNS recalls that in 2007 a similar initiative was considered, but following a wave of criticism, the members of the Seimas did not legalize the rents.

President Gitanas Nausėda has said that he would veto this attempt by the members of the Seimas.
