The weather in April is extremely contrasting and hilly.
A. Lapinskaitė stated that although heat often does not pamper, in the past there were certainly colder months in April, but people probably remember unusually hot episodes more.
“Here in 2019, both April and May were spoiled by summer temperatures, when the days were 25-29 degrees, and heat records were set.
The weather in April this year is more reminiscent of early spring, although there were days when temperatures rose slightly above 20 degrees. But those episodes didn’t last long, “he said.
According to the representative, if it is comforting, not only with us it is great, because this April is colder than usual in many parts of Europe.
“The Benelux countries, France, parts of the UK and Germany and other countries report that they have not seen such cold weather for decades. Extreme April weather in southern Europe destroyed much of the grapevines and fruit trees.
But temperature fluctuations happen constantly. Colder weather intrusions can be expected not only in April but May as well. In both May 2019 and May 2020, we had frosts and snow fell during the flowering of the plants. So even in the last month of spring, these weather jokes can still happen, ”says A. Lapinskaitė.
He also warned that it would be a bit warmer in Lithuania in the coming days, but umbrellas would still be needed.
“The clouds will be on the wane Wednesday night, especially in the western parts of the country, where temperatures will drop below. In the eastern parts of the country it can swing. The temperature will fluctuate between 0 and 3 degrees, and in Samogitia it will be between 1 and 4 degrees cold There will be fog in some places.
During the day it will be cloudy with clear periods, with occasional light rains. There will be a slight and variable wind. In Vilnius and Klaipeda the weather will heat up to 7 degrees, in Kaunas up to 8 degrees. There will be about 9 degrees of heat in Šiauliai and Panevėžys ”.
According to the representative, in the second half of the week the sky will continue to be covered by rainy clouds, but the temperature will already rise more and there will be about 8-14 degrees of heat during the day.
According to current forecast models, the more annoying it is to rain on Friday and Sunday (less likely to rain in the western part of the country), and on Saturday we are likely to be able to rest, the clearer it will be. Also, next weekend will be a degree cooler.
An impressive temperature jump is not expected early next week, the days will be between 8 and 14 degrees, it can often rain. “
According to A. Lapinskaitė, looking at the current data, it seems that next May will be quite normal and a bit more humid in terms of temperature.
“It just came to our notice then. Remember the old saying:” There is no bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. “
“We forgot that we had a very hot climate”
Climatologist D. Valiukas first pointed out that we had already forgotten that we had a very hot climate.
“If we evaluate this April in general and divide it into three decades, as usual, then the first decade was colder than usual, almost 1.5 degrees.
However, the second was already much warmer, 2.5 degrees, than is usually the case in Lithuania. The third decade is really cool and much cooler than usual. However, it is definitely not the coolest, because it has been the coldest, “he said.
When asked if such a “mix” of weather in recent weeks could be attributed to climate change, he commented that the answer would be yes.
“First of all, climate change is not a constant warming of the climate. Yes, it is an increase in the global air temperature, but separate years, individual months and, moreover, a period as short as ten or two weeks are the weather.
That means it is the weather for that season, which is currently driven by weather so cold that it invades the Arctic. Climate change is intensifying the process by which the normal circulation, which should be from east to west or west to east, is replaced by the movement of air masses from north to south or from south to north.
In other words, cold air invades where it is not very typical. For example, when central Europe suffered the cold of April, the hot weather rushed north. So climate change is a multi-year trend that is not going to go away, and this year it’s just this year’s weather. “
The climatologist pointed out that we value only Lithuania, but if we look at the global situation as a whole, everything would probably be different.
“Lithuania is the same, but if we look at the southern hemisphere, most of Asia or even southern Europe, the situation could be quite different. It should be understood that when we say global climate change, that is, what is happening at the level global, and we don’t just depend on what’s happening outside the window.
Another thing that is global climate change is a multi-year trend. It is not the climate that it is today and it may be hot or cold, but it is what has been going on for a hundred or five hundred years. So, they are evaluating which are the predominant trends, since it can be very cold for several years in a row, but those warming trends are perennial, ”he explained the differences.
He also pointed out that the average temperature next May should be in line with the multi-year norm and be around 12.5 degrees.
“However, we will probably never avoid climate changes in Lithuania. We have that geographic location. I would not dare to predict what summer awaits us, because there is more than a month left and those preliminary forecasts can be very inaccurate,” summarized D. Valiukas.
