The deputy director of the Marijampolė sugar factory was involved in the incident reminiscent of the night’s action movie. The man had a wounded head and arm. According to him, masked and armed people broke into the factory’s administrative facilities in the morning. There could have been about 20 of them.

“We saw a group of people dressed in black enter, with masks breaking windows and doors with metal objects. We were all forced to stretch out on the field. We lay on the ground for about 15 minutes, handcuffed behind our back until the police arrived, ”says Deputy Director Robertas Jakevičius.

The man says there were five other people besides him who allegedly worked. The sugar factory faces bankruptcy. When and how he injured his head, the deputy director says he does not remember and tells him that he had lost consciousness.

“I don’t know how to judge. It is more terrible here than the events in Russia or Belarus, or the 90s in Lithuania. I don’t know how to evaluate. Let the law enforcement agencies evaluate here,” says R. Jakevičius.

According to the factory’s lawyer, the nightly events are a fight for the oldest sugar factory. A receiver has appointed a temporary administrator to run the factory. However, according to the lawyer, he does not have the right to forcibly evict the employees of the company. A pre-trial investigation into the injuries was launched.

“The objective is to assume the management of Lietuvos Sugar. Question, legal or illegal ways. I believe that a self-appointed administrator, appointed by the court, would have tried to take over these premises legally and would have thought his intention was legitimate, and would have tried. In this case, he sought to illegally seize the premises, ”says lawyer Erikas Rugienius.

The lawyer for the company that took over the management of the factory has a different version of events. According to the lawyer, the windows and doors of the premises were broken due to the fact that all the entrances were barricaded. An excavator bucket blocked the entrance to the administration and no one was reportedly hit. Congestion occurred when people did not leave the facility in good faith.

“While the administrator was trying to enter the premises of the company, we met several drunk people who had dedicated something there. These individuals attacked both the security guards and me personally quite aggressively, ”said lawyer Marius Tamošiūnas.

The fate of the sugar factory should become clear in a couple of weeks. Either it has been restructured or it has declared bankruptcy. According to the temporary administrator, the factory workers will be invited to work tomorrow and activities will resume. Working here didn’t take a week. The factory’s debt, according to preliminary data, could reach 30 million euros.
