Already this weekend, one of the biggest Lithuanian basketball festivals will take place in Panevėžys: the four finalists of the Citadele King Mindaugas Cup (Citadele KMT). Final preparations are made not only by the basketball players but also by the referees.
The Citadele KMT Final Four event will run from February 13-14. There will be five games: two semi-finals, the small final and the grand final, as well as the duel of the Queen’s Cup.
Seven judges will be in charge of the smooth running of the Citadele KMT final four in Panevėžys: Gytis Vilius, Tomas Jasevičius, Jurgis Laurinavičius, Artūras Šukys, Gintaras Vitkauskas, Gvidas Gedvilas and Juozas Barkauskas.
All seven judges have international experience, six of whom also worked on the four finalists from last year’s tournament.
“It just came to our attention then. All of them have accumulated a lot of experience, both locally and internationally. These are the best and most important people we currently have in Lithuania,” said Algimantas Pavilonis, Director of Referees for the Basketball League. of Lithuania (LKL).
It is not certain which three judges will work in the final match yet: the names will be revealed only on the eve of the final, considering all the circumstances and even the work in the semifinal duel.
“We will not reveal these details; the decision will also depend on how the judges will appear in the semifinals. Judges also need to have their own leader; they, like athletes, have their own form, it changes. All factors need to be evaluated and then just On the eve of the final, decide which people will work in the decisive duel, ”said A. Pavilonis.
In the final of the Queen’s Cup, the referee team will be joined by two women, currently the best Lithuanian referees, who are also established in European basketball.
“We will have FIBA authorized judges in this match: Indrė Balnionytė and Milita Stalaučinskaitė,” added A. Pavilonis.
In this year’s Citadele KMT final four, judges will wear a uniquely designed T-shirt with flexible screens; This innovation was first tested last year and received good feedback.
Basketball fans will also have the opportunity to hear what the referees are talking about during the game: the referees will have special microphones to record the sound.
Kaunas “Žalgiris”, Panevėžys “Lietkabelis”, Utena “Juventus” and Klaipėda “Neptūnas” will compete for the trophy in the quarterfinals.
