“An unscheduled inspection of the Klaipedos Energija Klaipėda district boiler room has started today. The final results of the investigation from the Environmental Protection Agency are also awaited,” the Department of Environmental Protection said.
Last Friday, the Klaipėdos vanduo company stated that it had determined where the pollutants had reached the Curonian lagoon through the pipes of the underground storm water networks, but did not reveal the name of a specific pollutant.
The Department received information about the contamination in the Curonian Lagoon last Tuesday. The Environmental Protection Agency laboratory then took samples of water and surface sewage from the Curonian Lagoon.
Preliminary research results have shown that the concentration of total nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended solids in surface wastewater discharged into the environment is several times higher than the permitted limit.
The final results of the investigation will be received from the agency on Thursday.
