The Department of Defense (NAM) is submitting a government draft resolution that argues that the additional position will help secure the process of ongoing and planned bilateral defense projects with the United States.

“Cooperation between the Lithuanian Armed Forces and the Pennsylvania National Guard in the field of personnel training is intensifying. Other projects are being developed for the acquisition of weapons systems and the arrival of rotating US forces to Lithuania for exercises is increasing, ”says the project.

Ongoing projects include an agreement with the United States government on the acquisition of Oshkosh JLTV armored SUVs and negotiations on the purchase of Black Hawk helicopters.

Last year, Lithuania signed an agreement for the acquisition of 200 American armored SUVs for 145 million. euros. The JLTV SUVs will be manufactured by the American company Oshkosh Defense, a contract signed with the United States government.

The first cars should arrive in Lithuania at the end of 2021, the last one in 2024. They will be assigned to the Land and Special Operations Forces.

The ministry says that expanding the office of the US Defense Attaché at the embassy will not require additional budgetary funds, as the position will be kept within the allocations of the Ministry of National Defense, which will require around 130,000 per year. euros.

Brigadier General Modestas Petrauskas serves as the United States and Canadian Defense Attaché at the Lithuanian Embassy, ​​and currently has a deputy.
