It is planned to resume navigation in the Nemunas from Kaunas to Belarus.

The Directorate of Inland Waterways, which signed a memorandum with ten municipalities a year and a half ago on the development of maritime transport, is currently seeking to acquire a floating and underground excavator and expects cleanup work to begin in April 2021.

“It is necessary to form the street, the furrow with buns, such non-special rubble buildings. The mileage is considerable, great work, but it requires new equipment, because the management has a new and a very old excavator, its capacity is not enough to repair even downstream from Kaunas to the Curonian Lagoon, not to mention the upper reaches, “said Vladimir Vinokurov, head of management.

According to him, the municipalities managed to convince the Ministry of Transport and Communications with the management of the benefits of the project, assigned 2.6 million for the purchase. Special equipment is planned to be purchased later this year.

Shipment renewal is expected to stimulate municipal economies, tourism and attract investment.

According to him, many do not know that “after boarding the ship in Kaunas, it will be possible to disembark in the Black Sea.”

“It just came to our attention then. Of course, local shipping will be available in certain sections in a few years. But when it comes to communication from the ship in Kaunas Lagoon and if we want to go down, for example, to the Black Sea or somewhere instead of Europe, which is possible through Poland, through the Augustów Canal, we will have to wait four or five years, “said the director.

According to V. Vinokurov, ships sailed in this section during the interwar period, but navigation was fragmented and there are certain sections of the river that were never cleaned.

The excavator purchased by the Directorate of Waterways will be different from the one used in the lower sections, because in the mentioned section from Kaunas to Belarus the waters are very shallow in some places, the bottom is stony, unlike the river that falls from Kaunas, where the bottom consists mainly of gravel and sand.

“It would be a self-propelled crawler device that not only tracks, but also floats in the water like a boat, has a replaceable suction, dig and excavator head. For example, it leaves the platform, enters the water on a steep slope with tracks, leaves where it is deep enough, floats in the water like a boat, and when it begins to reach the bottom, it drives again, “said V. Vinokurov.

If it is not possible to leave the ground clear in some places, it is planned to load it into the support container.
