A deadly disaster in a pond near the town of Papilio in the Biržai district occurred at dusk. A beaver hunt was held near the dam, attended by two men from a group of drum hunters. One of them suddenly fired a shot into the water. Unfortunately, it was not the beaver that emerged, but the body of a dead man. The investigation was initiated by both the police and conservation. The hunter was arrested by the police.
“There were 5 people in total, 3 people were fishing and 2 people were hunting. An investigation into illegal spearfishing is underway, ”says Mantė Ramanauskienė, a conservationist from Biržai.

“A man was injured during the hunt and died at the scene. An investigation into the murder was launched, the suspect was arrested and the man was sober during the hunt,” says Tadas Martinaitis, representative of the police communication.
It turned out that while the beavers were hunting, possibly three men were poaching in the pond. The 38-year-old hunter and probably supported the diver, who was probably extinct and was wearing a wetsuit. A shot from a shotgun was fatal to the shooter – it hit him directly in the head. When the officers arrived, the poachers exploded.
“They sailed with a spearfishing rifle and shot fish, there are reports that a completely forbidden gear was used. 5 flax, bream and carp were hunted. They escaped from the agents by inspecting and questioning them, ”says M. Ramanauskienė.
The president of the Panevėžys Fishermen and Hunters Association says it is very likely that the shooter could mistake the diver for a beaver. Hunter’s Error: A shot was fired without ensuring that the target in the water is actually a beaver.
“Diving right now, when it’s cold, the divers wear wetsuits and it was probably black. The beaver also, you know, floats with its head sticking out, it sees motley currents, the current, it could have completely confused it, apparently it was a lack of visibility light, ”said Rimantas Misevičius, president of fisheries and fisheries. hunters association.
“In the darkness of day, you can hunt by stalking if you see what you are hunting, because it is forbidden to shoot without being sure what you are shooting at,” says M. Ramanauskienė.
Papilans find it difficult to understand how circumstances could have coincided in this way. The elder of Papilis is also surprised by the tragic hunt. It is true that just a month ago, he had complained to local group hunters about a beaver trap at the mansion, but that case is not related to that. It is said that Pasvalys of the pond hunter:
Well, if it got up, the beaver thought maybe. And if it was still dark, it could have been. “
“If the black guy came out as a beaver, he looked like a beaver. I don’t know.”
“They drive here from everywhere and from Biržai, and from below you can see the cars when we go to the cemetery, often in Kubiliai and the Papillans are fishing and the non-Papillans come, they come a lot.”
“There are ponds in the territory of the mansion, where these animals reproduce, obstruct the passages and collect the cellars of the neighbors. Because there were outraged neighbors and we asked for permission. It was issued, but I repeat, caught, ”says Papas elder Renas Čygas.
The pond is stocked every year, making it very popular with fishermen. According to conservationists, divers, one of whom tragically died, have been suspected of poaching the fish for some time, but have not been caught so far.
