The commission that evaluated the architectural idea for the reconstruction of Vokiei street started by the Vilnius city municipality evaluated the best 3 of the 18 ideas presented.

In the first place and with the prize of 9,000 euros, in the unanimous opinion of the commission, the Strassen-Platz project wins.

Second place (7,000 Eur) was won by the Willkommen project.

Three places (4,000 euros) win the Parallels idea.

According to the municipality, the authors of the winning idea now expect long, careful work, research, discussions with experts and communities to turn the idea into a project. The commission has made detailed comments for the first three projects.

Strassen-Platz

In the Commission’s opinion, the authors of the German multifunctional street system Strassen-Platz have succeeded in creating laconic rational solutions that allow the character of the street to spread and destroy local identity.

Professional and practical project design solutions. The authors of the project have delved enough into the focus, the practicalities and the seasonality of the garden street in Vokie. A well thought-out and locally adapted technological solution, such as the use of an acne barrier or waterproof coating on a project. It is realistic that such a project can be implemented for its quality using durable means. According to the Commission, the implementation and detailing of the small-scale architect raises questions about practicality, but these problems could be successfully resolved in additional project details, according to the report distributed by the municipality.

By approaching historical compatibility, the authors of the project subtly subvert the contradictions of the previous environment, visually restoring the structure of the positions, but avoiding artificial changes in the terrain.

The functional division of the space is not physical, therefore, it does not jeopardize the general perception of the space of the boulevard, the facades of the street pavement are not covered, the main parts of the boulevard are preserved, opening the baroque v. The prospect of Catherine’s Mantle in the south, the old junction and the Msini Street routes are shown, says Mindaugas Pakalnis, the chief architect of Vilnius.

The Commission found that the authors of the project created a dynamic space for the development process using simple configuration tools that are unique and context-sensitive in each segment. At the same time, both sides of the street combine to create a coherent and easy-to-use street space. The cover of the historical urban structure proposed by the author forms areas adapted to different functions for the design of cafes, cafeterias and recreational spaces. Such a solution provides opportunities for improvisation, does not unify the street space, creates conditions to create a unique character of each individual street element, a separate section, the historic facade, function and functions assigned to the street space . The Commission considered that in this way the authors create a variety of scenarios for the street space.

Quiet traffic on the new side of the street creates a more unified street space, but at the same time poses safety concerns. The authors of the project emphasized that the goal was to create an SPD so that car drivers feel they were driving in a psychic area, and not the other way around. Iuri’s presentations draw attention to the fact that the location of the bike path on the historic pavement envisaged in the project is changing, it is extremely inconvenient to ride a bicycle. Cyclists need to be elevated to a new part of the street where they can move in the calmer general traffic flow.

In the Commission’s view, the project authors have not yet been able to find the optimal ratio of street pavements to hard surfaces, and further development of the project will increase the area and variety of street pavements at the expense of hard surfaces.

Willkommen

Second place was awarded to the competition work Willkommen praises the boulevard tradition of demolishing old and new parts of the street. The commission asked for half the strength of the project to increase the number of streets, while retaining the views of the boulevard, the pragmatics, and the simple solutions of street elements. The main weakness of the project are the universal and unrelated architectural and landscape elements.

These people were praised for being able to free the eastern embankment from traffic, thus gaining the development of the pedestrian space and service on the sunny side of the street. This creates unique conditions both for the development of new activities in the street space and for the development of eldyn.

The commission called it a bold experiment and the discovery of strong authors. Finally, the work was seen as a conceptual and sensitive project based on respect for the history of Vokie Street, with minimal invasion. Unfortunately, the proposal will remain at the stage of an abstract, undetermined concept, therefore it was not considered to evaluate what it would be like if it were actually implemented, especially in terms of organization and organization of flow.

Not here yet

M. Pakalnis says that the competition will end and that the chosen winner is not yet necessary, that the work of the competition will be implemented here and now.

The level of professionalism of the ideas presented to the competition, the depth of understanding of the problem and the fulfillment of the solutions presented with the problems of space are very different. It is understandable that both experienced and novice architects can participate in the open competition. But at a time when criticism of some of the work submitted to the competition has begun to spread, it seems to us that it will take a good job to say that the competition is a success. I said that we have found it: although it is not suitable for implementation here and now, it is still really necessary to adjust and harmonize, but in accordance with the wishes of the municipality and the population in essential aspects, he says.

According to M. Pakalnis, it is obvious that after the last reconstruction, which took place more than 20 years ago, Vokiei Street has become a new function and has become more attractive, but its potential has not yet been revealed and used by Complete, especially considering the fact that public space is more active. For recreation, the old town is very lacking.

Vilnius’ chief architect paid for the municipality’s decision not to continue designing in accordance with the project proposals for the reconstruction of Vokiei Street prepared in 2015, which foresaw the contradictions of the previous law and timely and necessary.
