At the end of Liepų Street, at the intersection of Arimų and Jaunystės streets, it is planned to install an intersection controlled by traffic lights. There was not a single accident at this location and the signs prohibiting left turns did not solve the traffic problems.
Last December, the Klaipėda Municipality Road Safety Commission clarified the road safety issues at this location. It was decided to limit the possibility of turning left from Arimų and Jaunystė streets during rush hours.
Passengers are directed towards the center of the port city to move to the nearest traffic light controlled intersection with Joniškės street and at this place they should turn onto Joniškės street or turn and drive towards Jaunystės street.
The same maneuver should be performed for those who drive from the city center. Drivers enter Arimų street by turning on the Palanga highway viaduct. Residents, having passed a considerable circle, have to return and only then can they become a newly developed residential neighborhood.
Such restrictions are provided from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The locals have asked for the speedometer that had previously operated here to be returned. Local people at this intersection would also like directional lighting.
However, it was decided to look for a modern change for the traffic lights to emerge at this intersection.
“We are still coordinating the issue, there are questions for designers, the police and representatives of public transport will give their opinion. But we do have funding for traffic light intersections. There will be changes, but the work will take time. We hope that the traffic lights at the intersection will appear in early September when the children will start going to school, ”said Arūnas Barbšys, Deputy Mayor of Klaipėda.
With the appearance of traffic lights, there will be no more signs forbidding left turns.
“There will be a traffic light, everyone will turn where they want, according to separate sections of the traffic light,” the deputy mayor assured drivers.
