The Euroleague regular season is halfway through and the initial image of the teams’ lineups is already somewhat brighter. So far, Rimas Kurtinaitis and his coach Chimki in the Moscow region may like that image less.
2 wins and 15 losses – This is the tragic first part of the season for the Chimki team, which is currently immersed in a series of nine losses. In the current Euroleague format, where all the teams are fighting each other, this is definitely one of the worst sections to play, not to mention that Chimki really had to aim for the bottom of the tournament table on budget. For the Pamaskve team itself, this is also the blackest stage of the year at this tournament.
By the way, in last season’s unfinished set, Chimki had 13 wins and the same 15 losses.
The Krepsinis.net portal decided to see what bad highs were previously tolerated by the club leaders who had the patience not to fire the head coach. As the format of the Euroleague changed, we will go back to 2016, when all teams had matches with all competitors, not with groups.
First of all, it should be mentioned that two coaches have lost their jobs in the Euroleague this season; In the face of a pandemic, this is in fact the season when coaches are very rarely fired. For comparison, 2018-2019. previous season the New Clubs had replaced 6 of the 16 professionals.
The changes were first introduced by Crvena Zvezda in Belgrade, who fired Sasha Obradovich after 2 wins and 9 losses, and with a total of 5 wins and 11 losses, the club surpassed only R. Kurtinaitis’s students in the tournament table. Now the team is led by Dejanas Radonjičius.
Later, Panathinaikos Athens decided to remove Georgios Vovora, who recorded an identical record of wins and losses: 5 against 11. It is not yet clear who will replace him.
Lekavičius
As for the last season, Kaunas “Žalgiris” survived the worst series, winning nine times in a row, from November 1 to December 27. However, Šarūnas Jasikevičius, who had survived such stages until then, was inviolable. By the way, in 2018-2019. “Žalgiris” also had a black section with 1 win and 7 losses, but the excellent finish allowed him to advance to the playoffs.
Last season’s Milan AX Armani got off to a great start, but then survived a stage with 1 win and 8 failures. Still, Ettore Messina remained in office to this day.
The Crvena Zvezda team also had an identical section towards the end of the season, although Andrija Gavrilovičius quickly replaced Milan Tomičius, and since the end of November the club has been coached by Draganas Šakota. He was the last specialist to record the worst stage and achieved only one victory in the 19-27 rounds.
At the end of the season, the Vilerbana ASVEL team began to fall apart: initially, they recorded six losses, then the section turned into a series of one win and 9 failures, and Zvezdan Mitrovičius was fired only at the end of the season.
Last year the surprising Bayern Munich was not so good last year, but the start of 6/11 was enough to fire Radonjičius after the first round, by the way, Oliver Kostičius, who replaced him, turned out to be worse: the season ended with the second / eighth stage.
Zenit Saint Petersburg was immersed in a series of six defeats and slipped into the tail of the Euroleague – after the first round they had a ratio of 4/13, but the club had a lot of patience with Joan Plaza – he worked until the round 24 and was later replaced by Xavi Pascualis.
Ernakas
2018-2019 Chimki’s nightmare closest to the current season was the Daruschafaka team in Istanbul. It is true, it is worth mentioning that then in the Euroleague not 18 but 16 teams faced each other. Then, after half a regular season, Daruššafaka also had just 2 wins, and at the same time experienced a series of 12 failures, the longest in the Euroleague of this format. The club leaders had enough 1/10 leg for Ahmet Chaki to be fired, and Selcuk Ernak, who replaced him, did not perform miracles either.
Podgorica’s Budučnost team started the season with six failures and said goodbye to Alexander Džikičius after section 3/12, although Jasmin Repeša, who replaced him, finished with ten defeats in a row and showed an even worse result.
By the way, the changes did not work in the Las Palmo team from Gran Canaria: Salva Maldonado left the team after stage 3/7, was replaced by Víctor García, but managed to lose 10 consecutive games, after which he was dismissed. By the way, the match in Kaunas turned into the last nail. To end the season in a more honorable way, Pedro Martínez arrived before round 26.
Team Tel Aviv Maccabi tolerated a 1/6 start with Neven Spahia, but had no intention of waiting any longer and made changes. Ioannis Sfairopoulos, who started with two misses, then led the team on the road to victory and avoided bigger pits.
Pianigiani
The Milan team had shown patience with Simone Pianigiani, who was not worth a spot in Section 2/9. By the way, it was this season that Chimki got R. Kurtinaitis back, who replaced Georgios Bartzokas. The latter won 7 wins and more than 19 rounds, but did not save the post. Upon arrival, R. Kurtinaitis brought the team only 2 wins and 9 failures in the remaining matches, and Chimki finished the season with a series of 8 losses.
2017-2018 Valencia’s “0/10” survived the worst run of the season. Although the club was considering firing Txus Vidorret at the time, the job remained to be completed.
It was also the moment when Anadolu Efes took the last position in the Euroleague: V.Perasovičius spent the season at the helm of the team, but was forced to say goodbye after winning 3 victories in 9 rounds. The club was then coached by Ergin Ataman, who has been working until now, although the situation did not change, and at the end of the season Anadolu Efes lived a 2/11 nightmare.
A year earlier there was another longer series of defeats in the Euroleague of this format, twelve in a row, and was created by Kazan Unics with Yevgeny Pasutin at the helm. However, the club made no changes and allowed the strategist to complete his third consecutive year in Kazan.
At the bottom of the 2016-2017 Euroleague AX Armani also stayed. Jasminas Repeša can probably understand how R. Kurtinaitis feels now: He had managed as many as 18 losses in 21 rounds with the Milan club at the time, but this didn’t topple him either.
Andrea Trinchieri worked the entire season at the Brose Bamberg Club in Bamberg at the time, despite having two no-betting matches: 2 wins – 8 failures and 3 wins – 11 failures.
Stability was also demonstrated by Istanbul’s Galatasaray, who has been coached by Etaman since 2012 and who allowed the strategist to finish the season despite a 4/12 start in the Euroleague.
Chimki’s teams will soon have another difficult challenge in the Euroleague: a match in Kaunas against Žalgiris. You’ll see if Friday manages to break the nine-loss series, or maybe he’ll have to dig an even more pit.
