“Until the consent of the states is obtained, the process is secret. I cannot reveal the names of people or states because that is the law. And anyway, there is also a question of state prestige here,” said G. Landsbergis to journalists after the committee meeting at the Seimas.
The name Vygandas Jankūnas was discussed in public as a possible candidate for the post of ambassador in Brussels.
According to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, he did not present this surname to the Seimas committee.
“No, that name was not entered,” Landsberg noted.
The Minister did not hide his hope that an ambassador to one of the most important countries, the United States, would be appointed as soon as possible.
“I hope very soon. I can tell you and assure you that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is ready and waiting for this vote. I bring you good news, we prepare documents, send them to the host countries and the process will continue soon ”, he emphasized.
According to G. Lansdbergis, the Ministry tentatively agrees with the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Presidency of the Seimas on the surnames presented.
“There is a preliminary agreement that these candidacies and those states are coordinated,” the minister said.
When asked if the so-called silent conversations with the presidency went smoothly, Landsberg said he was trying to focus on the process itself.
“I try to communicate less, negotiate more and promote this process more. Perhaps others will decide otherwise, “said the minister.
Following information in the public sphere that former Foreign Minister L. Linkevičius and former Minister of National Defense R. Karoblis were considered the most realistic candidates for the post of Ambassador to the US and the EU, President Nausėda he said they needed “political cooling.”
Such argument provoked an intense debate. Some said a legal basis was needed for such an order, others supported the president’s view. The former ministers themselves did not comment on the situation.
Landsbergis said that people who work for the state should be valued, but at the same time it is important to show that the government was able to agree on such an issue.
“My personal assessment is different, but we must not send a signal to foreign partners that we are an incapable state that cannot find consensus. We need to move forward and find consensus. It may not be ideal, (…) but we agree and now we come out with a single package, “said the chancellor.
According to him, a person who has worked in the public service for many years should be able to return to his previous position after having worked as a minister.
“In my understanding, a person can and should, because we are sending the wrong signal to all public officials, whom we also sometimes try to attract into the political field, because their experience is needed. Ingrida Šimonytė is one of those people we once attracted from the public sector and I am glad we did, ”said G. Landsbergis.
According to BNS, the candidate for head of EU representation in the CEC was not presented on Friday. The committee put forward candidates for the head of missions in the United States, Germany, the United Nations and the mission to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg.
Advisor to President G. Nausėda Asta Skaisgirytė says that the nominations submitted by the Seimas URK have been coordinated with the Presidency and are expected to receive approval from the host countries in the near future.
The Foreign Minister coordinated the four nominations presented today to the Seimas Foreign Relations Committee with the President. These are professional diplomats, and we hope they will receive agrarians from the host countries in the near future ”, Antanas Bubnelis, representative of the president, delivered A. Skaisgirytė’s comment to BNS.
Pabellón hopes that the ambassadors in Washington and Brussels will be named for Easter
For his part, URK president Žygimantas Pavilionis did not disclose the names of the candidates presented to the committee and the countries to which they are proposed, but said he expected the ambassadors in Washington and Brussels to be appointed before Easter.
“I am very hopeful that we will have it before Easter”, Ž. Pavilion.
According to him, the wide public debate on the procedures for appointing ambassadors is damaging.
“Let’s spend less time on this unprofessional debate and make sure that that diplomatic service, as US Secretary Anthony Blinken said, is meeting the increasingly complex challenges of the 21st century. I propose to end this discussion, the train has moved, soon there will results ”, said the president of URK.
He was also pleased that Minister G. Landsbergis established the standard of professionalism for diplomats not only in law, but as Ž. Pavilion, and in the daily activities of foreign policy.
“I see that professionalism is increasing both in Lithuania and in representations abroad. I am happy about that” Ž. Pavilion.
Delphi recalls that former Interior Minister Eimutis Misiūnas also received a negative conclusion from the Presidency on the return to the post of judge. He made no secret of the fact that he was considering going to court.
