The Lithuanian men’s basketball team should play the European Championship group matches in Cologne, Germany. FIBA is expected to confirm this at their meeting on Friday.

The Lithuanian Basketball Federation and the German Basketball Association reached a cooperation agreement and signed a formal agreement. Since 2015, countries that organize group fights have the option of choosing a team to face in that country. In 2017, Lithuania received such an invitation from Israel and played the group’s match in Tel Aviv.

Such an association seeks close cooperation and mutual benefit: attracting as many fans as possible, increasing ticket sales, carrying out other projects related to the championship and strengthening the partnership between the federations. If FIBA approves this agreement, it would mean that Lithuania would already meet the first competitor in the European Championship: it would become the German national team, which the Lithuanians would face at the LANXESS stadium in September next year.

“We are pleased to work closely with the German Basketball Federation and the agreement reached. Both parties have found common ground, they want to create a good show for the spectators and provide excellent conditions for the teams. We believe that it will also be convenient and economical for fans go to Germany to support the national team, and looking positively at future fights, the route will also be comfortable as the final fights of the European Championship will take place in Berlin. After the official confirmation, we will continue with the preparations and We will inform fans about pending promotions and ticket sales, ”said Mindaugas Špokas, Secretary General of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation.

“We quickly agreed with our Lithuanian compatriots that the partnership in the preliminary stage of EuroBasket is very meaningful. The cooperation would be mutually beneficial and we hope that FIBA will confirm our agreement on Friday,” said Wolfgang Brenscheidt, General Secretary of the German Basketball Federation. .

This Friday the meeting of the board of directors of FIBA Europe will take place, during which the agreements between the parties must be approved, and the ceremony of the draw for the European Basketball Championship will take place on April 29 of this year.
