Lithuanian Road Administration in 2021. plans to install another 112 medium gauge systems (VGMS) on roads in the third quarter, which will measure speed in 56 sections. The works are scheduled to be completed by the end of the summer. The installation contract was signed with the UAB Fima.

An agreement was also approved with the UAB Belam for the installation of another 100 facilities (50 sections) in a later period (2022).

What sections will be installed first?

According to Evaldas Tamariūnas, manager of LAKD’s International Communications and Communications Department, all speed control devices currently installed and being installed on State Highway Administration highways are new and modern. In addition to speed, the devices verify the validity of technical inspection, liability insurance, payment of the road user fee.

In which sections will the new meters be built first, as a matter of urgency? The order of priority for the selection and installation of medium speed meter locations outside the settlement territory was approved by the Director of the Directorate of Highways of Automobiles SE Lietuvos in 2018. October 10 in order. Priorities for future speedometer locations are determined based on the criteria outlined in the methodologies.

Average annual daily traffic intensity (hereinafter, VMPEI) – is an important factor that determines the probability of an accident, that is, the higher the VMPEI of a road section, the greater the accident probability on that road section.

When the VMPEI is 9000 and more cars / day, the road section receives 20 points, when 2200– 8999 cars / day – 15 points, when 400–2199 cars / day – 10 points, when 0–399 cars / day – 5 points. 8.2.

Consequences of traffic accidents – Road users injured or killed in traffic accidents on the corresponding road section testify to the danger of the section. If 3 or more people were killed or injured in traffic accidents during the last 4 years, said infrastructure will receive 30 points, if 2 – 20 points, if 1 – 10 points, if there were no such accidents on the road section, no points will be awarded.

Unsafe driving speed it is probably the main cause of accidents: exceeding the speed limit determines the severity of the consequences of accidents. If in the reports of the Road Police Board the lack of choice of a safe driving speed is mentioned as a cause of the number of accidental accidents in the last 4 years, 30 points will be awarded for that section, if the selected speed is not identified . As a cause of the accident or it did not occur, no points are awarded for this section of road.

Bending restriction on a stretch of road – On sections where turning is prohibited, compliance with the permitted driving speed must be ensured. In many cases, the cause of an accident are dangerous curves and exceeding the speed limit. If it is forbidden to turn 71 and more percent on the section of the road where it is convenient to install VGM. the length of a road section, that road section will receive 20 points if 51-70% turning is prohibited. the length of the road section: 15 points, if it is 30% to 50%. length of road section: 10 points, if up to 30 percent. length of the road section – 5 points.

Speedometer Math

2020 At the beginning of the 20th century, 50 average speed meters were operating on Lithuania’s state highways, measuring speed in 25 sections.

At the end of last year, 70 new-generation instantaneous speedometers were installed on state highways under previously signed contracts.

Until 2021 at the end of the summer it is planned to install 112 average speed meters that will measure the speed in 56 sections. Until 2022 at the end of the summer the installation of another 100 medium speed meters (50 sections) is planned.

The location and installation deadlines of the new average and instantaneous speed meters can be seen here.
