The Klaipeda State Port Authority has signed a contract with Latvian companies SIA Baltijas jūrų geologijas centrs and AB BMGS, which have won the tender and are operating under a joint venture agreement, according to a press release.
“As the pier is in poor condition, it must be rebuilt to ensure safe ferry mooring and passenger service. Summer is coming and the flow of passengers moving to Smiltyne will increase, so I want to point out that rebuilding the ferries will not interrupt the work. The works are planned to be organized and carried out in such a way as to ensure the uninterrupted operation of the AB Smiltyn ferries in the northern part of the quay during the summer season, “says Algis Latakas Director General of the Klaipėda State Port Authority.
In order not to disturb the work of the ferries, the reconstruction will be carried out in stages. In total, the berth will be rebuilt about 130 m long, slopes, potholes and mooring posts will be installed. After the reconstruction of the pier, pavements will be installed. According to the contract, it is planned to dredge up to 5.5 m at the quay. Currently, the depth here is about 3m. The reconstruction of the dock and the dredging of the water area in the dock will not be carried out simultaneously, but will be carried out successively and only for a specified time.
After the reconstruction of the dock, it will be possible to moor two boats of different parameters at the same time.
The contract stipulates that the reconstruction will take approximately a year and a half. The value of the works is 1.9 million. Eur (VAT included).
