In Panevėžys, the Easter trees are packing their buds: surprising with their creativity and waiting for a record

Folk artist Rima Serdikevičienė, who created the human straw straw decoration for Easter in Naujamiestis, has been weaving straw fortresses for many years, which appear every year at the entrances of the city.

“I fell in love with the straw ball wrapping technique. Last year we made straw birds for Easter this way, and this year we decorated them with an Easter tree. They are just clods of straw, tightly wrapped in twine, ”says R. Serdikevičienė.

These straw balls are attached to a poinsettia tree, a large straw ball mounted on a stem.

“Straw is a very useful material, it can be transformed as desired”, says the teacher.

R. Serdikevičienė wove the Easter decoration that decorated the New Town quickly: skillful hands work very quickly. And the straw weaving for such beauty had been left behind since the construction of the Naujamiestis Straw Sculpture Park in the fall. In it, a master craftsman has created a tower with a balcony terrace and three oak trees.

“The work is not finished yet on the straw sculpture park. I’ll be back to work soon, planning to cut down more trees, old thick oaks to surround the bucket. If you climb on it, you will see a forest of straw, ”says the citizen of New Town.

Revived an old habit

The whole orchard, or alley as the locals called it, sprouted in Raguva. The city’s cultural center invited locals to decorate the Easter tree and bring a larger egg from the chipboard.

“The city’s tradition of dressing together for Easter has been going on for several years. We used to hang eggs on oak. This year we chose a pine tree, because in ancient times the Easter tree was called the Easter tree,” he says Kristina Juškienė, director of the Raguva Cultural Center.

The Easter tree was called a simple short stick with at least 12 twigs of wire attached to it. At each end of the twig there is a curved ring to lay the egg. The stick and twigs were wrapped in motley papers, decorated with paper flowers and placed in the middle of the festive table. This table decoration is typical of the Aukštaitija region.

Button Eggs

This year, the Raguva Easter tree is even bigger than last year. Margučius was created for him by the community of the cultural center and the students of the Raguva faculty of the Third Century University.

“We received not only the usual patterned eggs, but also button, crocheted, knitted and other eggs – ingenuity was really not lacking,” says K. Juškienė happy with the fantasy of the raguviškės.

Margučius was created at home by raguviškis and carried in a box in a cultural institution. So their leaders tried to avoid live contact so everyone would stay healthy.

The Easter tree has not finished decorating yet; residents should hang the decorations brought directly on the tree. Large chipboard eggs, one to two meters high, are also expected. They also have a place in the Callejón de Pascua.

“Everyone missed the holidays. We used to celebrate Easter with songs, with egg rolls, and now that is not possible. We try to raise people’s spirits differently,” says K. Juškienė.

Plates and nails were needed.

The community of the villages of Adomava e Hell has already decorated the courtyard with eggs. Inga Čepaitienė and Edita Jackuvienė cut out egg shapes of various sizes from particle board and decorated them with colored threads woven around tiny nails.

The town of Hell is home to 200 people and only a third are involved in the community. According to its president Diana Stakelienė, there is no shortage of ideas on how to celebrate the holidays, even in difficult conditions, but few want to implement them.

“In autumn we decorate with pumpkins, now with eggs, we always come up with something, we just want more people to contribute our thoughts,” the community leader does not hide.

Decorate a disc tree

And in Panevėžys, Vydūno Street, the record-breaking Easter tree that surprised passersby grew every year. Last year, the owner of the yard, Aldona Ladavičienė, hung a number that is hard to imagine: up to 3,000 eggs. However, this year the atmosphere in Panevėžys is different. He says he’s in no rush to get dressed and doesn’t have as many Easter eggs anymore.

“This quarantine is not working well, you don’t want to dress too much, you don’t want to have fun,” admits A. Ladavičienė.

However, even during the quarantine, he did not abandon the family tradition: Panevėžys will also have an exclusive decoration this year. Only this time A. Ladavičienė is preparing to decorate a tree with 500 eggs on Friday. Some of them are from last year, some will have to be recreated from the empty eggshells accumulated during the year.

“It is a very fragile ornament. Many eggs crashed last year while they were outside. They are broken by the wind, the rain, and the shadows of the sun fade, stretch. Others stay home throughout the year, ”says Aldona.

With the help of her grandchildren, this year she is preparing to paint eggs for outdoor decorations. But even this method is not that simple; after all, hollow eggs wrapped in rags with herbs and onion peels don’t drown in paint and float to the surface.

“Eggs in paint must be gently pressed with a saucer to sink. It happens that the shells do not resist – everything happens in this work ”, smiles the creator.

A. Ladavičienė regrets that due to traffic restrictions between municipalities, it is not possible to go out to bring fresh tree branches for Easter. They unfolded the first sheets and refreshed the festive table of Panevėžys.
