More than 40 teams intend to clean bodies of water in Lithuania, the Green Policy Institute announced.
“Due to the quarantine situation still in force in the country, we invite residents to travel to the closest body of water at their chosen time this Saturday and manage individually or in small groups,” said Ieva Budraitė, director of the Institute of Green Policy. .
According to her, Lithuanians are among the countries that are most actively involved in the global campaign.
This year, the initiative’s map recorded twice as many treatment sites as last year.
“Global demand for disposable plastic products has increased during the quarantine period, from take-out food containers to disposable gloves. In search of the most suitable for the initiative, and highly contaminated, riverside, we ourselves are convinced that some of these products end up in nature. This shows that the initiative is especially relevant this year, “said Justina Anglickytė, representative of River Cleanup.
According to environmentalists, various additives in plastics, such as stabilizers and flame retardants or other toxic chemicals, can be harmful to the entire ecosystem. Plastic broken down into small particles can accumulate in tissues and interfere with the activity of organisms: growth, reproduction, nutrition. This could lead to his death.
According to the Green Policy Institute, less than 40% of rivers meet the criteria of good ecological status. In Lithuania, almost every second is considered to be in average, poor or very poor condition.
The global river cleanup campaign will be held in Lithuania for the second time. Last year, 500 volunteers attended. Approximately 20 tons of waste were collected from Neris and Nemunas and their coasts.
