All residents are invited to “forget” about their cars for at least one day and choose another more environmentally friendly mode of transportation: walking, biking, skateboarding or roller skating, using public transportation, etc.

According to data from the Ministry of the Environment, thirteen municipalities in the country contributed to this campaign this year and made it possible for their neighbors and guests of the city to travel one day on public transport for free.

Tauragiškės was the first to take advantage of this opportunity, residents of this municipality could travel by public transport for free on weekends.

On Tuesday, public transport will take you for free in the municipalities of Vilnius, Kaunas, Klaipėda, Marijampolė, Biržai, Druskininkai, Palanga, Joniškis, Jurbarkas, Kaišiadorys, Utena, Radviliškis. In Birštonas, residents and guests of the city will be transferred by ferry through Nemunas for free.

The idea of publishing a car-free day once a year originated in 1998 in France. It was quickly taken over by other countries. This one-day campaign organized by cities in 2000 was supported by the European Commission. The success of the car-free day led to the campaign developing and running throughout the week.

In Lithuania, the municipality of Vilnius was the first to contribute to the campaign “Day – Without your car” in 2000, and a year later, Kaunas.
