On Sunday in Latvia, near Cēsis, a Lithuanian citizen died and another Lithuanian citizen was injured when a plane crashed, confirmed to BNS Aivis Vincevas, representative of the Civil Aviation Agency (CAA).
At around 1:30 pm Latvian police received a report that a plane with two Lithuanian citizens had crashed at an airfield in Priekuliai village, Cēsis municipality. The pilot died and the passenger was injured and was rushed to hospital.
The emergency medical service, BNS, confirmed that one person died in the incident and another was taken to hospital with multiple injuries.
A CAA representative said the accident was caused by a Lithuanian-registered civil aviation aircraft taking off from the Priekuliai airfield.
Agrita Vitola, spokesperson for the Latvian State Fire and Rescue Service, told BNS that a private plane had crashed at the airfield. One man got off the plane and the other was picked up and the arriving doctors declared his death.
The Latvian police have launched an investigation into the plane crash. Investigators are currently working at the scene of the incident.
The legendary ANBO II aircraft, restored by two enthusiasts, Arvydas Šabrinskas and Rolandas Kalinauskas, is considered the pride of Lithuanian interwar aviation. Nothing less, or perhaps more important, if it can be compared, than the famous “Lituanica” by S. Darius and S. Girėnas.
A total of 9 ANBO aircraft projects were developed by Lithuanian Military Aviation Commander, Brigadier General, aircraft designer Antanas Gustaitis.
The acronym ANBO means “Antanas wants to be in the air”. Therefore, the ANBO aircraft by Antanas Gustaitis and the three DOBI models by Jurgis Dobkevičius are considered the true beginning of Lithuanian aviation, the DNA of our country’s aircraft designers.
