The disaster occurred at 4 pm 55 min. local time (5 hr 55 min Lithuania) about 70 km southwest of Budapest.
The cause of the accident is not yet clear, police reported on their website. Information on the age and identity of the victims is not yet available.
Eight people were seriously injured and another 40 were slightly injured, according to the MTI news agency.
The injured were transferred to regional and capital hospitals.
Photos posted on the social network Facebook of rescue services at the scene show that a bus with Hungarian license plates rolled off the road and rolled onto its side.
Firefighters rushed to the scene to rescue the trapped passengers.
“They returned from a day trip to Croatia,” the local news portal said. Index.hu said a driver at the scene of the incident.
“When we saw what happened, we were the first to stop helping,” he said.
In a statement on Facebook, Government Minister Katalin Novak expressed “her condolences to the families of the victims.”
During a major accident in 2003, 33 people were killed when a train and a bus carrying German tourists collided in Siofok, a popular Hungarian resort on Lake Balaton.
