A group of 14-17-year-olds played soccer and swam at Apamo Beach in the Central Region on Sunday, 80 km from the capital, Accra.
The cause of the disaster is unclear, but all Atlantic beaches in the country have been officially closed since the beginning of March to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
“We removed 12 bodies … including two girls and took their remains to the body,” police spokeswoman Irene Oppong told AFP.
Two other young men have been rescued and are being treated at a local hospital, Opong added.
Police said they were continuing to search for potential victims or surviving teenagers. An investigation into the causes of the disaster has also been launched.
In Ghana, the severe restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 epidemic last year remain in effect, although a vaccination campaign has already been launched in this West African country.
Since the start of the pandemic, a total of 86,465 cases of COVID-19 have been identified in the country and 647 people have died. However, the actual figures are considered to be higher because the scope of testing is limited.
