A high-traffic car in a pedestrian zone on a shopping street blew up Tuesday. In addition to the five killed, 14 others were injured.
Prosecutor Peter Fritzen said the driver of the car, a 51-year-old Trier resident, probably had “psychiatric problems.” Additionally, alcohol was exposed during the incident.
After interviewing the suspect, the police stated that they saw “no indication of political motive”. Fritzen said the prosecutor’s office was considering requesting psychiatric care for the suspect.
At the same press conference, Trier Mayor Wolfram Leibe said the deaths included a nine-month-old boy and a 73-year-old woman.
“I think it is the darkest day in Trier since WWII,” he said.
A 25-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man also died. Police have not yet released the details of the fifth victim.
Malu Dreyer, prime minister of Rhineland-Palatinate, where Trier is located, said she was shocked by the death of the baby. He expressed his condolences to all affected families.

The mother of the deceased baby was injured. She is currently being treated in a hospital.
Witnesses previously said that when the car struck people, they flew through the air.

Speaking to reporters, Mayor W. Leibe spoke with tears in his eyes about the shock he had experienced on the street when he saw a child’s shoe next to the body of a girl.
“It was a horrible sight,” he said. “He hurt a lot of people.”
The incident started around 12 pm 50 min. Greenwich Mean Time (2:50 pm Lithuanian) and ended four minutes after the first calls to rescue services. The police arrested him when he was escaping from the main shopping street in the city.
According to police officers, the suspect flew through the streets for about 600 m or one kilometer. Officials surrounded the scene of the disaster and questioned people from all over the city center.
A witness filmed the arrest of the driver on a smartphone. The footage shows a suspect handcuffed and lying face down on the ground next to a damaged car, who was harassed by several officers.

Joachim, who attended worship services with his teenage daughters Helena and Sophia, said he was sad.
“We wanted to show compassion for those who lost their loved ones,” he said.
A man who introduced himself to a former neighbor of the suspect told NTV that he had mental problems. Also, he disagreed with his parents and had problems with money.
