Solingen is close to Cologne and Dusseldorf. The mother of three girls and two boys, a 27-year-old woman who later danced in front of a train in Düsseldorf, was injured and taken to hospital, police spokesman Stefan Weiand told n-tv.
The dead girls are one, two and three years old, and the boys are six and eight years old, the German news agency DPA reported. The woman’s sixth child, an 11-year-old boy, survived and is now with relatives.
It is not yet clear what the children died of and what the motive for the crime was. The remains were found after a grandmother who lived 60 kilometers away approached police on Thursday afternoon, said the region’s top security official, Herbert Reul.
Officials are said to have been able to contact the children’s father.
It is suspected that the children may have received medication.
As the DW writes, the local community was shocked by the tragedy in the city.
“We never imagined this could happen, but not here,” said a local.
Locals gather around the house where the tragedy occurred, carrying flowers and toys.

“So far, we cannot say anything about the motive. The mother must be questioned, but now her condition does not allow her to do so,” said police spokesman Stefan Weiand.
“We cannot say anything about the causes of the deaths, they are being investigated,” he added.
