In Belarus, a taxi driver who rescued a young protester chased by several owners armed with sticks became the hero of the protests that followed the inauguration of President Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who was declared president of the country after a secretly rigged election.
The incident took place on Wednesday night in Minsk, near the Pushkinskaya metro station.
A video published by Euroradio shows a taxi standing in the street at the traffic light. Suddenly a protester appears running, pursued by several owners armed with sticks. The man crashes into a taxi and dances on it. The driver reacts instantly, presses the accelerator pedal, turns into the opposite lane of traffic, then on the pavement, and after passing other cars at high speed, escapes from the pursuers. The owners managed to run towards the car and hit it with sticks, but were unable to stop it. They were still trying to chase the passing car, but stopped at the intersection.

This video was filmed Euroradio journalist Mikhail Ilyin. He said he and a colleague filming the event were spotted by the owners and were unceremoniously turned onto asphalt. According to the journalist, the owners demanded that the video be removed, but the ingenuity of a colleague helped save it.
So far, the personality of a brave taxi driver is unclear, but on social media he has withheld a lot of praise, he offers to repair a car for free or even hold the post of Minister of Transport.
Some 300 people were detained during protests in Minsk and other Belarusian cities during the protests on Wednesday night, according to the Viasna human rights center. Officials used water cannons and tear gas against the protesters. The protests continue on Thursday: People line up in solidarity chains, and in Minsk, car drivers are specifically slowing down traffic.
