Local officials said the 44-year-old was sailing on a Pacific lake near Cairns, a favorite with tourists, when he was attacked by a crocodile.
“Suddenly he felt the blow when he grabbed his head, as he understood it, a crocodile,” said Paul Sweeney, a Queensland ambulance worker.
The doctor said that the man managed to catch the reptile by grabbing his hand by the nostrils.
The man sailed a considerable distance back to shore, fearing another crocodile attack, and crawled ashore.
Rescuers found him sitting up and “extremely calm.”
Although the crocodile bites remained on his head, face, shoulders and arms, it prevented serious injury.
“He was very lucky,” Sweeney said.
Edge-headed crocodiles are known to live in the area, but human attacks are relatively rare.
The victim was taken to Cairns Hospital and should be fully recovered, P.Sweeney said.
“He is quite an energetic person and he said he would be sailing there soon. So, he’s braver than me, “added the doctor.
