Representatives of the Department of Environmental Protection and the State Forest Company informed BNS that none of the employees of these institutions is a suspect in the investigation.
In early January, the Panevėžys County Police launched a pre-trial investigation, during which the actions of Panevėžys environmentalists in the story of the bison shot by Utena District Politician Jonas Slapšinskas were evaluated.
The Department of Environmental Protection applied to law enforcement in connection with the work of Panevėžys environmentalists.
The female bison was hunted on the second day of January in the Krekenava-Naujamiestis professional hunting area unit belonging to the State Forest Company during game hunting.
The protected mammal was shot and fined several tens of thousands of euros by a member of the Utena District Council, the “peasant” Jonas Slapšinskas, who said he mixed the bison with a boar.
The Panevėžys District Court, which was examining the bison shooting case at the time, decided to return the case to the Department of Environmental Protection, considering that the investigation of the incident could have been carried out negligently.
The court ruled that the details of the case had not been compiled, leading to an incorrect calculation of damage to nature and possibly a legally inappropriate act.
Prosecutors are also currently investigating the bison shot.
The bison is included in the Lithuanian list of protected species of animals, plants and fungi as a protected mammal.
