Important message for drivers: 112 new gauges will soon register average speed on the country’s roads

“The consequences of speeding can be extremely painful, therefore, together with the Lithuanian Highway Police Service, the Lithuanian Transport Safety Administration and the municipalities, we implement road safety prevention measures that help to develop driving habits of drivers at a safe speed and contribute to reducing traffic accidents, “says Remigijus Lipkevičius, Acting Director of the Highway Administration.

The new meters will not only measure speed, but will also check the validity of roadworthiness tests, liability insurance, payment of the road user fee, etc.

Currently, according to previously signed contracts, 70 new generation instantaneous speed meters and 100 VGMS (50 sections) are already installed on state highways.

The location of the speedometers will be determined taking into account the criteria established in the methodologies for determining the order of the speedometers developed by the Highway Administration. One of the most important criteria is the average annual traffic intensity and the number of accidents. The order of priority of the instantaneous and medium speedometers consists of road sections of state importance selected according to the established criteria, where it would be more convenient to implement speed control systems from the point of view of road safety.

At the beginning of the year, 50 VGMS were operating on Lithuania’s state roads, which measured speed in 25 sections.
