In January 2020, neighbors missed a man who lived near a farm in Ignalina. Her cell phone was turned off, and she hadn’t told anyone about plans to go anywhere. Upon receiving the report of the mysterious missing man, the police officers found and interrogated their son V.Šerėnas who lived at the police station.
This said that the father had gone with the woman in another district.
Ignalina’s story turned out to be suspicious to officers, so after interrogation, officers went to the missing person’s farm in Girminiai village and carefully inspected it. Behind the garden, the police found a pile of bedding and underneath, the body of the farm owner. Forensic experts later discovered that the man was killed two weeks ago and died of serious head injuries.
Police officers soon found and arrested Vidmantas, the killer’s son.
A 13-time convicted recidivist is suspected of having committed the crime while intoxicated.
He confessed to the death of his father lying in bed when he returned from a guest on the night of January 1, where he met the New Year. The man admitted that he had been intoxicated and using drugs that night. Realizing that the father was no longer alive, the son took his wallet with cash and a bank card and continued to drink, spending the deceased’s money, and then began taking it from the house and selling various items.
The pre-trial investigation in this case was conducted by officials of the Criminal Investigation Division of the Criminal Police of the Utena County Chief Police Commissariat, and the investigation was led by Valdemara Chodorcevičienė, Prosecutor of the First Prosecution Division of the Panevėžys Regional Prosecutor’s Office. According to the prosecutor, the responsibility of the accused is compounded by the fact that he committed the crime by being intoxicated with alcohol and other psychoactive substances and by being a repeat offender, sentenced 13 times.
For the intentional murder of a family member, the Penal Code provides for 8 to 20 years’ imprisonment or life imprisonment, according to a report released Tuesday by Rasa Stundžienė, Chief Specialist in the Communication Division of the Office of the Attorney General ( Panevėžys).
