When ice clumps begin to form in Lithuanian rivers, the hydrologist says that according to current forecasts, they should pass calmly and not cause floods.

“There will be congestion, but how much it can cause, how much the water level will rise, it is difficult to estimate until now, because according to the weather forecasts there are not very high temperatures, it is as if the water did not rise much, everything should happen and pass well” BNS said Wednesday. said Janina Brastovickytė-Stankevič, a hydrologist with the Hydrometeorological Service.

According to her, currently ice clumps have formed in Neris in Vilnius, near Žvėrynas, while in the Jonava river it is still frozen.

According to the hydrologist, the threat of flooding could be due to a sudden warming if the water flows into the rivers from the melting snow, which raises the water level further.

“Now we have as much water as in the river. And only as long as the congestion stops, the water can rise, which is not much, because the ice cream is still moving a little, ”he said.

“At least for the moment, according to the forecasts, what the meteorologists told us, we don’t see much danger,” added Janina Brastovickytė-Stankevič.

On Wednesday, the Kaunas District Municipality held an Emergency Operations Center meeting on a possible flood. The municipality is concerned that it may be caused by the construction of a new bridge in Kleboniškis during the glacier, as the river bed has narrowed during the glacier.

According to the Lithuanian Highway Administration, this would not have a decisive impact on a possible flood.

According to data from the Hydrometeorological Service, it will freeze in Lithuania in the next few nights, but the days will be positive from Thursday.
