According to I. Šimonytė, the situation regarding the spread of the coronavirus is deteriorating, as predicted. The number of cases is growing rapidly and this is not just a Lithuanian phenomenon.

“Probably, in most European countries, the number of cases has sometimes increased in recent weeks. And in some places it has even exceeded the height of that old wave. Even though these are countries where the degree of vaccination it is higher than in Lithuania, ”the prime minister told reporters in the Seimas on Tuesday.

According to her, it is difficult to assess what works more here, if COVID-19 mutations or characteristics of the human lifestyle.

As I. Šimonytė said, we cannot help but see the situation. Vaccination has been very slow in recent weeks.

“It means that the government will have to go back to the discussions on what conditions to establish so that we do not have a big siege in the hospitals again. Because, as I have said many times, it is not the number of cases that is scary. If this is the number of cases that do not become occupied beds in hospitals, especially resuscitation, that’s one thing. But if this is the number of cases that become occupied beds in hospitals and it means that people do not receive other medical services, It is already a very big problem, and that is why we will have to find all the ways to prevent it from spreading, “said the head of government.

What will those shapes be? According to I. Šimonytė, the Government will further discuss and report them.

When asked if additional incentives for vaccination are being considered in this context, as Latvia and France are doing, the prime minister said she knew that “incentives in France are negative.”

“Only the possibility of using certain services in the presence of a vaccinated person, or already mandatory with a negative test, which is a passport of opportunities.

That’s when we introduced the Opportunity Passport, there was a lot of discussion about who needs it here because the quarantine is still being revoked and now that Opportunity Passport has very limited use.

I do not rule out the situation that it is possible to link back to certain activities, a certain nomenclature of activities, whether a person has a passport or not, ”the Prime Minister explained.

Since it is the middle of July, there is plenty of time and opportunity for vaccination, I. Šimonytė said he takes the opportunity to once again urge the group of people who are currently the slowest to vaccinate: people aged 20 to 40 .

He stressed that the more people vaccinated, the less chance there was that the mutations would again destroy normal life.

“I think it is still a matter of people’s self-determination. However, I do not rule out that the government will have to take some negative incentives to politely remind us that vaccination has some added value,” he said.

The government may consider expanding the scope of mandatory testing this week. According to I. Šimonytė, it is necessary to increase the volume where we have a significant risk and a low level of vaccination.

“It will be necessary to discuss certain interfaces, for example vaccination in certain jobs. I cannot rule it out, but we are not discussing it yet,” he said.
