“According to our forecasts, we will also have floods, they will be big enough for the last 10-15 years,” the hydrologist told Delfi Day.
“But compared to long-term observations, it will be neither record nor very large,” he said.
When asked if a flood like the one a decade ago caused a lot of damage to people’s property in Radikiai, near Kaunas, J. Šimkus said that it is still difficult to predict, but that possibility exists.
“There was an ice crush near Radikiai, which is difficult to predict. If such a scenario is repeated, it can cause damage to people’s property, ”said the hydrologist.
“Until today, all the conditions are in place for such a scenario,” he said.
So far, the snow, according to the hydrologist, is melting faster only in cities, and the actual flooding will start a little later.
“Everything melts and runs in the cities. Spring seems to have arrived in them. However, in nature, forests and fields, the snow melting process is not so fast, ”explained J. Šimkus.
“It will take longer for most of the snow to melt and the meltwater to flow into the rivers. Then that real flood will begin. According to current weather forecasts, the flooding is likely to start in early March, ”said the hydrologist on Delfi day.
