Where to start for those who want to update their furniture or other interior details? You can choose from a wide range of paints, from fully matte to glossy, and thus apply your selected shades to your interior. The woman warns that nowadays people usually opt for gray and bright tones.
Surface Preparation
As Giedrė says, if you choose to paint furniture with chalk paint, there is no need to scrub or prepare the surface.
“Chalk paint is self-priming, so the biggest job that needs to be done is cleaning the surface so it is not greasy, free of dust or other dirt,” says the interlocutor. You can use household soap, a drop of dishwashing liquid, or a special furniture cleaner. After you’ve cleaned the surface and dried it, you can start painting.
With this paint you can paint any surface, both solid wood, lacquered and wood panels.
“It is true that it is important that the surfaces are smooth and do not peel, because otherwise the paint may come off. In this case, the detached parts should be removed and only then painted”, advises Giedrė and adds that glass, metal , plastic, laminate, ceramic and any other surface can also be painted with chalk.
How to paint?
Giedrė says that it is better to choose synthetic fiber brushes with dense bristles, because there are less scratches when painting, but if the surface is smooth, you can also paint with a roller, it will be even faster.
“We apply the paint directly on the furniture and there is no reason to fear that at first those stripes are more visible; people are usually afraid. The first coat is usually ugly, but when we apply the second and third coat, then all the beauty comes to the fore ”, says Giedrė, who says that others paint with a simple sponge.
The number of coats that will be needed depends on the color of the furniture and the paint. If it’s dark and we paint lightly, more coats will be needed, and if the paint and furniture are similar colors, fewer coats will be needed.
If there are trim and grooves in the painted furniture, it is better to paint them smoothly, without filling all of them, because we will reduce that pattern, it is better to paint the paint The renovation of this cabinet uses the Faded Grandeur technique, as the interlocutor says: it is a decoration style with a touch of antique, faded and worn luxury.
Furniture should look as old as possible, shading the areas where it naturally lubricates the most.
“If you paint and decorate furniture in this style, choose pastel, as if they were faded colors that match each other, use a lot of patina, salts, shadows, which are made with paint, wax, rust or oxidized copper effects.

Furniture should look as old as possible, the areas where it naturally lubricates the most, darkened, around the handles, the bottom of the furniture, the corners, the grooves. I want to emphasize that I do not paint authentic, very old furniture that is unique. Meanwhile, discolored furniture and massive manufacturing defects are suitable for that, ”says the interlocutor.
When painted: waxed or varnished
There are many variations on how to paint with chalk paint; all you have to do is choose the effect you want to create: aged, multi-colored or painted in one color. You can choose to paint one layer with another and the other with a different color, thus producing different color combinations.

“The first coat needs to dry for at least four hours before we can paint the second. To do this faster, you can use a breeze, but it is better to paint after a day. When we paint the second coat, it may appear that no more coats are needed. However, after painting the surface it is recommended to wax or varnish. When waxing, if the surface has been painted unevenly, there are very few layers, certain defects may appear, for example, where the surface is covered thinner, ”says G.Mazienė.
The wax should be a colorless wax first, and then you can use wax of another color. You can rub after waxing so that the layers come out one after another to create an aging effect. “If the surface is used more, I would recommend varnishing, otherwise the wax will work well, especially when we want a smoother and more velvety surface”, advises the interlocutor.

When is the furniture available?
According to G. Mazienė, all water-based paints harden in about a month, but this does not mean that they cannot be touched. “The most important thing is that you just keep them, you can put a napkin on, don’t rub them hard when cleaning and things like that,” advises the interlocutor. She adds that even without experience, it is possible to paint boldly, because these paintings are not “whimsical” and are usually easy to achieve the desired effect.
