A nightmare in Kaunas, never happened before
Kaunas, famous for its constantly repaired roads and the broad ambitions of Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis, has become a veritable “congestion capital” of the country in early summer. And it was felt not only by the residents of Kaunas, but also by everyone who has to go to Kaunas, or at least drive through it.
Traffic jams led to the closure of the city after the closure of the Castle Ring called one of the main transport arteries and the nearby P. Vileišis bridge that connects both the New Town and the old part of the city with the districts of Vilijampolė and Šilainiai. The municipality promises that the works will be completed on September 1.
At the same time, other busy streets continue to be maintained in the city, and the Highway Administration is implementing two “old projects” on the country’s main highway A1, connecting three major cities: Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipeda. Another, the third bridge over the Neris in Kaunas is already being built, the so-called Giraitė intersection is being rebuilt behind the ninth fort.
Traffic congestion on the Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipeda highway
Kaunas must be overlooked
Therefore, congestion is forming not only in the city, but also in the vicinity of the Mega shopping and entertainment center, on the Vilnius – Klaipėda highway.
What to do if you drive from Vilnius to the coast and find yourself in a traffic jam near Kaunas? A tip would be in this situation: you should not leave the main road and try to move around the city and enter the highway elsewhere. It really will not be better, the city will be overwhelmed by traffic jams, the traffic conditions during rush hours are not enviable, so the best solution in such a situation is to stay in place, arm yourself with patience and move slowly.
However, the best way to avoid less than pleasant experiences is to bypass Kaunas, which has become the “capital of congestion”. You can also reach the seashore by other routes, although the distances are greater, there will be an opportunity to admire the nature of Lithuania through the car window, and not observe the faces of desperately tortured drivers while emitting exhaust gases.
Kaunas became the capital of congestion.
You can go through Ukmergė and Jonava
These are some of the route variations that we have modeled with Google Maps.
332 km from Vilnius to Palanga by the most direct road through Kaunas and Klaipeda. theoretically you will cover the road in 3 hours. 38 minutes. This is calculated by the Google Maps application, which is widely used by drivers. However, in real conditions, an hour or two should be added to this time.
On the way to the seaside, the first road repair works begin in Kaišiadorys, and the biggest test would be in Kaunas at the Mega shopping center and a few kilometers behind it, where road workers work.
By avoiding congestion on the main national road A1, it is possible to choose a route on the peripheral roads.
One such route, 362 kilometers long from the capital, passes through Ukmergė towards Kėdainiai. Then turn towards Cinkiškės, where you enter the main country road A1 and head towards the seaside.
There is another possibility to go around Kaunas without making a big curve and avoiding a big congestion. When going from the capital to Kaunas, after reaching the midpoint, you should head towards Jonava on the road marked with number 143 near Elektrėnai. Continuing the journey on the E67 road, you will reach the Vilnius – Klaipeda highway. Google Maps indicates that choosing this route will take you 354 km, and the trip to the coast will take about 4 hours.
Alternative route from Vilnius to Palanga
A trip to the Coast – for those with more time
To avoid traveling on the main transport artery of the A1 country, you can choose another route. From Vilnius to Palanga, go through Ukmergė, Panevėžys, Šiauliai and Plungė. The length of the route is 373 km and the trip will last about 4 hours. 50 min.
Likewise the same, around 5pm you would have to drive on the west side – from the capital via Trakai in picturesque areas going to Birštonas and Jurbarkas and into Kryžkalnis entering the A1 highway. The length of the route is 383 kilometers.
If you have more time and want to see this interesting thing, you can choose another option, not to turn to the main road of the country by the same route, but to get to Palanga by driving through Šilutė. The trip will last more than 5 hours, you will have to cover 375 kilometers, but after Šilutė you will have the opportunity to visit Cape Ventė, visit the Mingė village, Kintai, called the Venice of Lithuania, and admire the nature of Pomerania.
