Ignas Klimaika, tire specialist at Inter Cars Lietuva, cautions that one of the most important inspections you can carry out on the car yourself is checking the tire pressure. The right pressure level not only determines driving safety and comfort, it also has a practical aspect.
“Due to excessive or insufficient tire pressure, the treads wear faster and incorrectly. Furthermore, tires with too low pressure create higher rolling resistance, which in turn increases fuel consumption ”, emphasizes I. Klimaika.
How to check the tire pressure?
According to a tire specialist at Inter Cars Lietuva, simply check the tire pressure with a manual pressure gauge. Just connect the device to the valve and look at the screen. If it is determined that the pressure is too low, it is best to go to the gas station. Almost all service stations have a compressor that can easily increase tire pressure.
“It is important to measure the pressure when the tires are not hot. Exposed hot air expands, which can lead to an erroneous result. When you get to the compressor, you have to wait until the temperature of the tires is close to room temperature ”, recommends I. Klimaika.
What should the tire pressure level be?
Mindaugas Šerėjus, representative of the Lithuanian automobile services unifying platform Motointegrator.com, states that the tire pressure information recommended by the manufacturer can be found on a special label inside the driver’s side side pillar or on the fuel filler opening.
“This information is also provided in the vehicle maintenance manual. When reading the manufacturer’s recommendations, it should be noted that the tire pressure of a heavily loaded or full passenger car should be higher. These values are also presented in a certain row in the table ”, explains M. Šerėjus.
According to him, auto service specialists advise to monitor the pressure regularly. It is recommended to check the pressure of tires less than five years old once a month and before each longer trip. If the car’s tires are older, the pressure should be checked more often.
