Three cousins, Bieliauskas, were tried for the brutal murder of a girl. The court of first instance had previously sentenced only Leon Bieliauskas to life imprisonment.
The other two had been favored by Themis. Karolis Bieliauskas was later sentenced to 17 years in prison and Mantas Bieliauskas to 16 years in prison.
The Lithuanian Court of Appeal decided to increase the sentences imposed on two cousins. Leon Bieliauskas continued to be sentenced to life imprisonment.
The court ruled more strongly against Karolis and Mantas Bieliauskas. It was also decided to imprison Karolis Bieliauskas for life. For Mantas Bieliauskas, the sentence has been increased from 16 to 19 years.
A stricter prison sentence was also imposed on A. Stankevičius: imprisonment of 4 years for 2 months (it was 2 years and 2 months) and T. Zagurskas: imprisonment of 4 years (it was 2 years).

Arguments of the Court
It was emphasized that the lower court imposed overly lenient sentences. Therefore, they were tight. However, M. Bieliauskas avoided life imprisonment. The case data show that he was not active in the organized group and did not participate in decision-making. No one consulted Mantas or listened to him. He has a son, he is not convicted, so he has not been sentenced to life imprisonment, but he has been hardened.
The court also ruled that Karolis Bieliauskas had committed all criminal acts, her role was not secondary. He was an active participant and executor in decision-making. His lawyer actively tried to downplay the role of K. Bieliauskas. Even the version that K. Bieliauskas did not understand at all what was happening at the forest site. Prosecutor Artūras Urbelis said after the hearing that he still saw no grounds to appeal the verdict to the Supreme Court, as the sentences for the convicted cousins had been tightened. It is true that the decision on the appeal can be made within 3 months.
Marius Liatukas, a lawyer representing the relatives of the murdered girl, stated that although the amounts of non-pecuniary damage had increased, they were not enough. However, the lawyer could not answer whether the sentence would be appealed to the Supreme Court. The decision will be made in consultation with the family, which, according to M. Liatukas, is already exhausted throughout the case.
Expect the harshest punishments
The news portal tv3.lt recalls that the case was examined at the end of October this year. During the last meeting, not only all parties managed to finish their closing speeches, but also listened to the rebuttals, the comments.
Marius Liatukas, a lawyer representing the relatives of I. Strazdauskaitė, said after the hearing that day that he hoped the court would impose the harshest prison sentences on the three people convicted of the murder of a girl:
“This is the position of the loved ones. On appeal, no circumstances came to light that cast doubt on the fact that they did not deserve to be sentenced to life imprisonment. I don’t see any hooks, the court examined this case in a very practical way and constructive, following all procedures.
I’m impressed that there is no way to prolong the process. The case is complicated and lengthy. My daughter’s father and I spoke with him that it had been almost 4 years since the crime itself.
But I would like to emphasize that both the pre-trial investigation and the judicial process, everything went smoothly, the work was done in an expeditious manner. The case has been examined very competently, so we hope that the decision will be the same. There cannot be too harsh a solution in this case. “
According to the lawyer’s personal assessment, he sees no pity on the part of the murderers. It is true that it is doubtful that after the decision of the Court of Appeal there is a point in this story. After all, it is likely that at least one of the parties will take the opportunity to appear before the Supreme Court of Lithuania.
Complaints filed
We remind you that almost all parties to the case have filed appeals against the decision made by the Kaunas Regional Court on April 3.
The Office of the Attorney General of the Nation, which has appealed against the conviction, seeks that the three Bieliauskas cousins accused in this case are sentenced to life imprisonment for the crimes committed.
By judgment of a lower court, three cousins were found guilty of the murder of I. Strazdauskaitė of Plungė in 2017, two robberies, destruction of property and illegal imprisonment. The court sentenced Leon Bieliauskas to life imprisonment, Karolis Bieliauskas to 17 years and Mantas Bieliauskas to 16 years in prison.
Algimantas Stankevičius from Marijamp and Tomas Zagurskas from Kėdainiai were also convicted in this case. They are punishable by two years and two months and two years in prison, respectively, for participation in theft, illegal possession and use of a firearm.
In a complaint filed with the Court of Appeal, the prosecution requests that T. Zagurskas be sentenced to four years in prison and A. Stankevičius to four years and two months in prison.
The parents, sister and ex-fiance of I. Strazdauskaitė, who were recognized as victims in the case, also request to impose maximum penalties on two of the three defendants and impose a total of 400 thousand. compensation for moral damage.
The Kaunas Regional Court jointly awarded 4,510 euros in material damages to the parents of the murdered girls of the three cousins and 30,000 euros each. 15,000 euros for each moral damage and 15,000 euros for each sister and fiancé of the murdered. for moral damage.
The condemned also filed complaints in the case, they are asking for a reduction in the penalties imposed on them. An appeal was also received from the convicted relatives.
Killed with a shovel
In March 2017, I. Strazdauskaitė left for Vilnius from his parents’ house in Plungė and unexpectedly disappeared. After a few days of intensive searching, his body was found in the Kėdainiai district.
According to the police, the girl was fatally beaten with a shovel.
