– What is the situation in the hospital?
– The situation, as in all of Lithuania, is tense in the hospital.
Currently, the Department of Traumatology and Orthopedics is not working, the feeding unit is gradually working, the Department of Internal Medicine is starting to work, the Department of Pediatrics has recently started operating.
– How many doctors are sick and how many are in self-isolation?
– We have more than 10 employees who are isolated, three have a mild form of COVID-19.
We will assess resuscitation capabilities and see if we can continue to provide scheduled services, if they need to be abandoned, and if there is a need to mobilize all staff to work with COVID-19 patients.
– In the separate building of the hospital, where the Nursing and Support Care Unit is located, you have enabled the rooms for COVID-19 patients, how many beds do you have here and where do the patients come from, how long will there be enough space?
– We have 40 beds on two floors. I think the section will fill up soon.
Together with guests arriving from Vilnius – Santara Hospital Infection Department – we monitor the situation, assess available resources, assess resuscitation capacity and see if we can continue to provide scheduled services, if they can be abandoned and mobilize all staff to work with COVID-19 patients.
– What patients fall, what conditions, serious probably not even here?
– Santara clinics have recommended having moderate to mild patients here, but these patients can very quickly become more moderate to moderate.
The people of Vilnius announced that they would accept patients with more severe forms, but we noticed that the reception is becoming more complicated, so I think the opening of the intensive care unit is inevitable. This would allow us to serve more critically ill patients.
– Do I understand correctly that the resuscitation of children at Alytus Hospital is planned to be resuscitated with COVID-19?
– Yes, it probably will. There should be four seats.
– How many people in your hospital are connected to ventilators, what are the resources of the team?
– Today we do not lack artificial lung ventilators. If we don’t have to expand, there will be a section that we have formed, I think the equipment available will be enough to provide artificial lung ventilation.
We are doctors willing to help people. As will be decided, so will be done.
– Have you heard of a proposal to establish a COVID-19 hospital in the region?
– I cannot call it a proposal, it is a reflection that perhaps the region should. If we do not become and others are, then we are committed to providing ambulatory, planned and, of course, emergency care to patients served by that hospital. I think we could do that.
– Would S. Kudirka Hospital of Alytus County agree to become a COVID-19 regional hospital?
– We are doctors, ready to help people. As will be decided, so will be done. But then the patients in the city of Alytus would be at a great disadvantage.
I think it would not be so appropriate, since COVID-19 could become one of the district hospitals and the support of the Santara clinics or the regional hospital would have to provide all other services, since both specialists and intensive care , resuscitation is needed.
Of the latter, we strive to provide scheduled and outpatient services. However, it all depends on the number of COVID-19 patients in need of urgent and necessary care.
– To what extent does the focus on the coronavirus now hinder the provision of medical services?
– Residents say that it is really more difficult for them to have access to both a family doctor and specialists. Until today, we provide all scheduled services. He performed 7 to 12 surgeries a day. Orthopedic-trauma services have been temporarily suspended.
We now have a Diagnostic Department, where patients are treated, but a little slower because it is safer. It takes time for medical disinfection.
Of the latter, we strive to provide scheduled and outpatient services. However, it all depends on the number of COVID-19 patients in need of urgent and necessary care.
– Thanks for the conversation.
