According to Ronald Grizickas, Head of Personal Insurance Products at BTA insurance company, more cases of tick-borne diseases have been detected this year and the number is expected to only increase.

“Last year we counted a total of 66 cases of tick-borne diseases with a total damage of 19,500 euros, and this year, before the end of the tick season, we already have 67 cases for which the insured has already paid 23,650 euros. “, He says.

According to the expert, Lyme disease dominates this year, as it did last year, among diseases transmitted by the company and those infected by ticks. This year there have been 60 cases of Lyme disease, with tick-borne encephalitis – 7.

The Center for Communicable Diseases and AIDS (ULAC) also records a higher incidence of tick-borne diseases, with 136 cases of tick-borne encephalitis nationwide in the first half of this year, almost a third more than in the same period of the year. last year (99 cases). There is also an increase in Lyme disease cases: 166 cases of Lyme disease were recorded in the first quarter of this year, which is 66 percent. more than last year in the same period when 100 cases were detected.

Most cases are found in Kaunas and Panevėžys

According to insurance company data, this year the highest number of cases of tick-borne diseases was detected in Kaunas and Panevėžys – five each. 4 cases were recorded in Molėtai district and 3 cases in each of Vilnius and Vilnius, Visaginas and Rokiškis districts.

“Incidence trends remained similar. Last year, Kaunas and Panevėžys also stood out: 8 and 9 cases, respectively. However, the city of Vilnius came in first with 10 infections,” says R. Grizickas.

A reminder for mushrooms: to prepare not just a basket

According to ULAC data, the multi-year dynamics of the incidence of tick-borne encephalitis shows that the peak of the incidence of this disease is observed in Lithuania between June and October. During this period, about 80-90% of all people with the disease.

Meanwhile, mushroom picking fever only starts in September, so going into the woods to look for mushrooms and not properly protecting yourself against tick-borne diseases carries a significant risk of contracting them.

“When going to the forest, people put on comfortable shoes, prepare a knife and a basket for fishing, but they have to do much more. Vaccines are the most reliable protection against tick-borne encephalitis, but they must be treated much earlier than the day before the trip to the forest, and there is no Lyme vaccine, which means that other protective measures are needed, as they never it is clear which mite may be a carrier. suck, ”explains R. Grizickas.

According to him, to protect yourself, you first need suitable clothing. Although mites can crawl around your body in your own backyard, most of them are found in wooded areas and areas where tall grass grows. When traveling to such places, it is advisable to wear clothing as light as possible that covers the body so that the ticks are more visible, as well as to cover the head. When you return home, it is recommended to carefully examine yourself in front of a mirror and make sure there are no crawling or sucking ticks on your body.

“It is also possible to reduce the risk of parasite infiltration by using special repellants and bracelets that repel them. I also advise you to take a special tick extractor with you, although there is still a high possibility that by the time it is noticed, the tick has already managed to cause damage, ”says R. Grizickas.
